The detained women members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group have now regained their freedom. Thanks to the high court sitting in Owerri which, on Friday, 24 August, granted the 114 women unconditional release.
Their travails began on on Friday 17 August when the women protested, demanding to know the whereabouts of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Consequently, the Police arrested them for unlawful assembly. They were remanded on the orders of a magistrate’s court in Owerri.
Public outcry followed the development. The bail application filed by the lead counsel to the women, Ejiofor Uche was, according to NAN, not opposed by the police..
Theaddus Oke, prosecuting for the police, told NAN that the case had been referred to the state Ministry of Justice for advice.
He said that the police had no say in whatever decision that was taken by the court.
