BREAKING: Fintiri declared winner of Adamawa governorship election

Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Ahmed Umar Fintiri, has won the Adamawa State governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  declared Fintiri victorious having polled 376, 552 votes to beat the incumbent Governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Jibrilla Bindow, who scored 336, 386 votes.

Prof. Andrew Haruna, the Returning Officer for the governorship election, declared Fintiri winner at about 12.49a.m. on Friday.

INEC had declared the March 9, 2019 gubernatorial vote in the state inconclusive.

The governor-elect was Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly in July 2014 when Murtala Nyako was impeached as Governor. And with Nyako’s deputy, Barrister Bala Ngilari, resigning just before the impeachment, Fintiri became Acting Governor for the three months which the law mandated before the conduct of a by-election

But before then, Fintiri was leading Bindow with 367, 471 votes, while the governor trailed with 334,995 votes.

The March 9 election was cancelled for various infractions, leading to the cancellation of 40, 988 votes.

Thursday’s rerun was held in 44 polling units across 28 registration areas of Adamawa State.
