Adeleke or Oyetola? Supreme Court rules in Osun governorship election petition today

In a few hours from now, the Supreme Court will deliver judgement on the 2018 Osun governorship election.

The 2018 Osun Election Petition Tribunal had, on March 22, 2019, upturned the victory of Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the September 22, 2018 governorship vote and declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke as winner.

The Appeal Court, however, overturned the judgement on May 9.

Subsequently, the case moved to the Supreme Court for final judgement. The apex court set today, July 5, 2019, for ruling on the matter.

Ahead of today’s judgement, the News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Osun State Police Command, on Thursday, said security has been beefed up in the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order ahead of Friday’s Supreme Court’s judgement on the 2018 Osun governorship election.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Folashade Odoro, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the police was fully prepared for the outcome.

“Officers have been placed on red alert and are pro-active to prevent any kind of violence or demonstration in the state.

“We will, however, want to urge people of the state to maintain law and order and go about their lawful businesses without fear or intimidation,” she said.
