COVID-19: Emergency Measures In Nigeria

The National Assembly has ask the federal government to take measures at ensuring that Coronavirus, otherwise known as COVID-19 does not spread in Nigeria. The call from both chambers of the legislature came with report of five cases in the country. Lagos State, which accounts for three of the cases, has adopted the resolution of the National Assembly, as it says that all gatherings of people above 50 should be stopped forthwith. Katsina State has also announced one case and so has said that schools be closed from Monday next week.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has advised religious organizations to take preventive measures.

The Senate had admonished President Muhammadu Buhari to address Nigerians on the development. The House of Representatives adopted resolutions that include the need to ban open worship or any gathering, increase awareness campaign on the virus, consider closure of business premises where a large number of people gather and also sign a memorandum with Senegal to get the equipment for testing suspected patients.

Earlier on the federal government had suspended the national sports festival that was planned to hold in Edo State. That decision was taken in spite of assurances by the Edo State government that it had taken measures to guide against spread of the virus during the festival.
