Manu Dibango: African saxophone legend dies of Covid-19
Barely a week after Congolese music legend, Aurlus Mabele, succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic, at 66, the dreaded disease has claimed another African giant.
Cameroonian music legend, and the king of saxophone, Manu Dibango has died of the disease. The saxophone legend died in Paris after catching. He was aged 86.
With his passing, Dibango, who fused jazz and funk music with traditional sounds from Cameroon, is one of the first global stars to die from Covid-19.
The saxophone legend, who won the African Music Legend award at the 2016 All African Music Awards, AFRIMA, collaborated with numerous artists across the world during his very long career.
They included the American pianist, Herbie Hancock; and Nigeria’s Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Dibango sued Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop, in 2009, after accusing him of stealing his song, Soul Makossa, for two tracks in the world’s best-selling album, Thriller. Jackson settled the case out of court.
