The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, on Friday, debunked claims that it had given its approval for drugs and vaccine for COVID-19 on social media.

Despite claims that there is a traditional remedy for COVID-19, the Nigerian Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development had yet to approve any as a vaccine. The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire and the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, have also said the World Health Organisation had not come up with any cure.

In a statement to refute the claims, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye said the organisation had not given any approval to any product from any company to cure COVID-19.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, said in a statement that the organisation had not given approval to any product from any company or individual to cure COVID-19.

She said, “The agency is concerned about reports on social and other media of drugs or vaccines to cure COVID 19.

“The agency has not granted any approval to any products for use as a cure or vaccine against COVID 19.

“The public is advised to comply with measures issued by the NCDC to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These include the use of face coverings/masks in addition to social distancing, washing of hands and use of alcohol-based sanitisers.”
