The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday asked the country’s service chiefs to step aside as a result of the rising cases of banditry and insurgency in the country.
The decision was based on the resolution of the upper legislative chamber following a motion sponsored by Ali Ndume, a Senator representing Borno South and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army.
The lawmakers said the effort of the service chiefs was not enough and asked its joint committee on security to find out why more than 200 army officers tendered their resignation.
Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, in his remarks said though the army was trying its best to secure the country, the effort was not enough.
The Senate, therefore, asked the service chiefs to step aside to allow President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint new people on board with better and fresh ideas.
Gabriel Olonisakin, Chief of Defence Staff; Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff; Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; and Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff; are all due for retirement.
