Woman Missing Since 1975 Is Found 42 Years Later In Nursing Home After She Was Believed Dead

In 1975, Flora Stevens disappeared from a New York hospital following her doctor’s appointment, never to return home.

Her husband had dropped her off at the Monticello hospital. When he returned to pick her up, she wasn’t there. Police opened a missing person’s case, but it was never resolved — until now, 42 years later.

There’s no knowing what Flora has done for the past few decades, but detectives note that she is alive and living in a nursing home in Massachusetts. She has dementia and hasn’t been able to enlighten them on what happened that day she disappeared, or why.

How did they find her so long after her disappearance? Cops were investigating the unidentified remains of a woman who might have been a match for Flora.

That’s when detectives started tracking down any relatives who could provide a DNA sample to identify the remains. It was during a records search that they found that someone was using Flora’s social security number.

They then tracked down that individual, who was living in a nursing home — and had been since 2001. She has no living relatives. The person’s name? Flora Harris.

When detectives showed her a photo of the missing person from 1975, she recognized herself!

What a relief for detectives, who were finally able to close this missing person’s case.
