Ex-Oyo Governor, Alao-Akala, Dies at 71

Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala,  a former Governor of Oyo State, has died, aged 71.

Family sources said the former police officer-turned-politician died in his home town, Ogbomoso, in the early hours of Wednesday, January 12, 2022.

Akala served as the Deputy Governor of Oyo State from May 2003 to January 2006.He became Governor same January 2006 following the impeachment of his boss, then incumbent Governor Rashidi Ladoja.

But his tenure was short-lived, lasting only 11 months, as Ladoja’s impeachment was overturned by the Supreme Court, and he was duly reinstated.

That seemed to have drawn the line between him and his former boss as he (Akala) contested and won the governorship vote in 2007 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

He served a full term as Governor of Oyo State, calling the shot till May 2011.
