Methodist Prelate, Samuel Kanu Uche, Others Regain Freedom

His Eminence Samuel Kanu Uche

The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Samuel Kanu Uche, his driver, and two other clerics who were abducted by gunmen on Sunday have regained their freedom.

Although details of their release were sketchy, Monday night, the Abia State Police Command confirmed the cheery news.

“All I can confirm to you now is that they have all been released,” the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, said, without giving details.

The Presbyter of Wesley Cathedral, Umuahia, Very Rev. Aaron Akabuokwu, also confirmed the release of the Prelate of the Methodist Church in Nigeria to ThisDay newspaper.

“Information reaching us is that he (the Prelate) and the others with him have been released,” he told the newspaper, adding, “I don’t have details for now”.

The abductors of the Head of the Methodist Church in Nigeria had demanded a N100 million as a prerequisite to releasing the captives.

But just as the leadership of the Church was mobilizing members to raise the ransom, news came that they had, indeed, been set free.
