DSS Frees Sowore, Pays N100,000 Fine
In obedience to the 24-hour ultimatum issued to it, Thursday, by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja, the Department of State Services, DSS, Thursday night, released the publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore, after holding him for 124 days.
Sowore was arrested at his hotel suite in Lagos on August 3, this year, for planning a series of protests tagged #RevolutionNow to press for better conditions of living for Nigerians and the death of corruption.
The protests were scheduled to start on August 5 across 21 towns and cities in the country.
On November 6, Justice Ojukwu had issued a release warrant for Sowore and his co-detainee, Olawale Bakare, an activist.
Bakare has also breathed the fresh air of freedom.
The DSS, according to a report by Premium Times, also paid the N100,000 fine ordered by Justice Ojukwu, to Sowore. The Judge slammed the fine against the DSS, Wednesday, for its refusal to furnish Sowore’s counsel, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, with the statements of the department’s witnesses.
