Assault on Police: Seun Kuti Arrested, Handcuffed, Taken to SCIID

Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has been arrested by the police on Monday.

A viral video on the internet shows the Fela Anikulapo heir in police custody, handcuffed and taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, in Panti for further investigation and possible detention.

The video is shared by Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, via his verified Twitter handle on Monday.

Sowore said Kuti had fulfilled his promise to cooperate fully with police investigations by visiting the Commissioner of Police in Lagos with his lawyers.

Sowore wrote: ”After visiting the @PoliceNG Commissioner in Lagos earlier today, @realseunkuti was arrested, handcuffed and taken to SCIID in Panti by @PoliceNG officers apparently for further investigations and possible detention over his altercation with a police officer on the 3rd mainland bridge. @RealSeunKuti fulfilled his promise to cooperate fully with police investigations and accordingly visited the Commissioner in Lagos with his lawyers

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, had on Sunday ordered Seun Kuti’s arrest after a video of the musician assaulting a policeman surfaced online.

“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,” the statement read.

In a video circulating on the internet, the singer was seen hitting an officer. However, in the short clip, the officer did not retaliate.
