Akpabio Shames Yari, Becomes Senate President

Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and ex-Minister for Niger Delta Affairs representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial zone, Godswill Akpabio, has been elected as President of the Senate.

The uncommon governor was the anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC..

The Senate, on Tuesday, elected Akpabio as its President after scoring 63 votes defeating Senator Abdulaziz Yari who scored 46 votes.

The result was announced by the clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal.

He said 107 senators voted.

Akpabio was the anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the seat of number three citizen, but was challenged by Yari, who is also of the APC.

Akpabio was nominated by Ali Ndume (Borno) and seconded by Adeola Olamilekan (Ogun); while Yari was nominated by Elisha Abbo (Adamawa) and seconded by Jimoh Ibrahim

Senator Godswill Akpabio has emerged the 10th President of the Senate after the lawmakers-elect had earlier commenced voting on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, in the build-up to the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

Senator Ali Ndume nominated Senator Godswill Akpabi, after reading the biography of the former Akwa Ibom governor.
