The acting Director General of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, on Sunday, confirmed that seven persons perished when a building collapsed in the nation’s capital.
A report monitored on Channels Television delivered the sad news when he visited the site of the collapsed structure along the Airport Road.
The collapsed structure was one of the partially demolished structures in the area.
Mohammed disclosed that the tragedy occurred on Saturday when people invaded the area to scavenge materials from the building which was being demolished by the Federal Capital Development Control due to alleged irregular documentation of land papers
The people, it was learnt, removed anything they could lay their hands on, including iron rods, plumbing materials, among other things.
And it was while scavenging that the particular building caved in, killing the seven people.
Mohammed also confirmed that two persons are currently receiving treatment at a hospital. He advised the general public to avoid endangering their lives by scavenging on partially, even totally demolished structures.

The exact number of people in the building when the incident tragedy occurred was yet to be ascertained but search-and-rescue efforts were still ongoing, Mohammed informed.
