72-year-old man dies after being swept away by flood in Delta community

A 72-year-old man, identified as Sunday Aimiyekagbon, has died after being swept away by floodwaters in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, along Imudia Street, off Charles Street, as the deceased was returning home on his motorcycle.

Residents said heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to rise rapidly, making the road impassable and leaving many commuters stranded.

According to a source in the area, the elderly man parked his motorcycle close to a concrete drainage channel and sought shelter in a nearby makeshift shop as the downpour intensified.

However, the motorcycle was reportedly swept into the fast-flowing drainage by the floodwaters.

In an attempt to retrieve the bike, Aimiyekagbon allegedly entered the water but was overpowered by the strong current and swept away.

His body was later recovered, throwing the community into mourning.

Speaking after the incident, the deceased’s son, Ambrose Aimiyekagbon, described the loss as devastating and called on the authorities to find lasting solutions to the persistent flooding in the area.

Residents also appealed to the Delta State Government and the Ika South Local Government Council to improve drainage infrastructure and clear blocked waterways to prevent similar tragedies.
