A Zuba magistrate court had, in July 2020, discharged and acquitted the short-tempered lawmaker guilty of criminal assault. Not satisfied with the judgment, the victim, Mms. Warmate, however, filed a fundamental human right suit marked CV/2393/19 against Abbo at the FCT High Court.
On Monday, the judge found Abbo guilty of criminal assault and ordered him to pay N50 million to the lady.
The victim’s lawyer, Mr. Lugard Tare-Otu, was excited by the verdict. He said: “I was a leading member of the team, with @nellymacaroni which filed the court papers in a civil suit between Ms Warmate vs Senator Elisha Abbo for the assault of Ms Warmate at an adult shop in Abuja. Excited to announce that the court slammed damages of N50m against Senator Abbo today.”
Senator Abbo was, on July 2, 2019, caught on tape assaulting Ms. Warmate during an argument at the sex toy shop where the victim was working. Abbo had just been sworn in as a senator of the Federal Republic barely a month before; June 11 to be precise. He had alleged that the young lady insulted him by calling him a ‘drunk’.
The senator’s untoward behavior triggered national opprobrium with many Nigerians calling for his prosecution. Some even called for his recall from the senate saying he lacked the comportment to be a senator of the Federal Republic.
The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, invited the sex-toy senator to the Police Headquarters in Abuja where he was interrogated. The force followed through by pressing charges and ensuring diligent prosecution of the fighting senator.
Monday’s judgment should bring some comfort to Ms. Warmate and a closure to the ugly episode.
