EFCC secures one-year jail term for fake spiritualist over $1,100 fraud

Justice C.N. Nwabulu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced a fake spiritualist, Solomon Odigie Moses, to one year in prison for defrauding and blackmailing an Indian woman seeking spiritual healing.
Moses was convicted on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after pleading guilty to a one-count charge of cheating and impersonating a spiritualist to obtain $1,100 from the victim.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said Moses was arrested in Ekpoma, Edo State, after receiving the money through his Zelle payment platform, with the naira equivalent subsequently transferred into his local bank account.
According to the commission, the convict operated a fictitious TikTok account in the name of “Dr Solomon” and presented himself as a spiritual leader capable of providing spiritual prayers and assistance.
The EFCC said Moses subsequently deceived the victim into taking a nude spiritual bath, which he recorded without her consent.
He allegedly used the recording to blackmail the woman, threatening to make the video public unless she paid him money.
An investigation by the commission revealed that the victim eventually paid $1,100 to persuade Moses not to release the footage of her nudity.
The charge against him stated that he had fraudulently impersonated a spiritual leader and obtained $1,100 from Sharon Kaur, an Indian national, under the guise of providing spiritual assistance.
Following his guilty plea, prosecution counsel, Maryam Hayatudeen, urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Justice Nwabulu subsequently sentenced Moses to one year imprisonment with an option of a N300,000 fine.
The judge also ordered that the $1,100 proceeds of the crime be forfeited and returned to the victim through the EFCC.
The commission said the conviction followed its investigation into the fraudulent activities and blackmail involving the fake spiritualist.
