Iran has executed two men convicted of spying for Israel, according to the country’s judiciary, amid an intensified crackdown on individuals accused of collaborating with foreign intelligence agencies.
The executions were announced on Monday by Mizan, the judiciary’s official news outlet, and come amid heightened tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
According to the report, the two men were convicted of espionage and collaboration with what Iranian authorities described as the “Zionist regime”.
The judiciary alleged that the men transmitted the coordinates of sensitive military and security facilities to agents of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency.
Iranian authorities said the information provided by the suspects assisted Israeli intelligence operations during the conflict.
However, the judiciary did not disclose when the two men were arrested or provide details about when or where their trials were conducted.
The executions are the latest in a series of capital punishments carried out by Iranian authorities against individuals accused of espionage, sabotage and collaboration with foreign governments.
Iran has increasingly used the death penalty against people it accuses of working with Israel’s Mossad, particularly amid heightened tensions and conflict involving the two countries.
The latest executions come as Tehran continues its crackdown on alleged foreign intelligence collaborators, with authorities warning against activities they say threaten Iran’s national security.
Iranian officials have announced several other executions involving alleged spies and collaborators since fighting involving Iran, Israel and the United States intensified in February.
