Tragedy occurred in the wee hours of Monday, in Lagos, as a two-storey building collapsed in the Cemetery area of Oyingbo, with an unspecified number of people trapped.
A release issued by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the building located at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, said the building had previously shown serious signs of weakness before it eventually came down Monday morning.
Adeseye further informed that the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team got a distress call at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday and the fire station responded promptly arriving the scene moments later.
On the rescue efforts so far, the statement said: “It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which has reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants.
At least 15 people had been rescued as at the time of filing this report. They included seven men, four women and four children, who were rescued with varying degrees of injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute‑Metta and General Hospital, Odan, in Lagos Island respectively.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing.
