Nigeria would, however, level scores in the dying minutes of the first half with a 44th minute header by Calvin Bassey that hit a perfect angle behind the net. The timely goal set the stage for a thrilling second half with both teams trying very hard to secure a berth at the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, hours before the cracker at Bloemfontein, the world football governing body, FIFA, had issued an official communication on its official X handle, clarifying the permutations in Africa’s Group C.

Before the match, Bafana Bafana led the group with 16 points, six clear of the Super Eagles who have struggled to chalk up 10 points with just two wins from seven matches. Benin Republic remained in the race with 11 points as they prepared to host Lesotho in Abidjan on Tuesday.

Here is the official statement by FIFA on X: “Two more teams could secure @fifaworldcup 26 qualification today. Egypt will qualify if they beat Burkina Faso, while South Africa will qualify if they beat Nigeria, and Benin fail to beat Lesotho.”

But the clarification has fueled fresh debate among fans, particularly regarding the unresolved disciplinary case involving South Africa.

Before its encounter against the Super Eagles on Tuesday, Bafana Bafana were facing the possibility of slammed with a three-point and three-goal penalty for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March.

The semi-final cracker will be played in Bouake, the second largest city in Cote D’Ivoire with a population of 740,000 (2021 census).

South Africa and Cape Verde, Saturday evening, played a barren draw in both regulation time and extra time, before Bafana Bafana won the game 2-1 during the penalty shoot-out.

After 120 minutes of a quarter final that was largely characterised by missed opportunities by both sides, South Africa edged out ‘unlucky’ Cape Verde, who lost four penalties to book their exit from the competition.

South Africa’s goalkeeper and Captain, Ronwen Williams, was a great inspiration to his team as he saved four shootout penalties. His excellent goalkeeping and heroic saves kept the match 0-0 at both full time and extra time.

Goalkeeper Williams denied Bebe, Willy Semedo, Laros Duarte and Bryan Teixeira through his spectacular saves. He had earlier made a magical late save tipping Gilson Benchimol’s first-time strike against the woodwork as extra time loomed.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha also made two exceptional saves in quick succession shortly after extra time began to deny Mihlali Mayambela and Teboho Mokoena respectively.

Bari also held a period of silence before their game against Sancataldese on Sunday.

Masinga made 31 league appearances for Leeds, scoring five goals.

“The thoughts of everyone at LUFC are with his family and friends.”

Noel Whelan played alongside Masinga at the Elland Road club and said it was “really sad news”.

“He was not just a friend and strike partner but one of the nicest kindest guys I’ve met,” added Whelan.

“It was a pleasure and privilege to have known and played with you Phil.”
