Full List of How Senators Voted on Electronic Transmission of Election results

For the Record

Before it proceeded on its annual summer holiday, last Thursday, the 9th Senate passed the long-awaited Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021 but were sharply divided along party lines on the adoption of the electronic transmission of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission had suggested that electronic transmission be employed by INEC where practicable, as contained in section 52(3) of the bill.

Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC, Niger North) had moved the motion for the amendment and was seconded by Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South).

The Committee on INEC, in its initial recommendation, had proposed that the electoral umpire “may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable.”

However, at the end of the physical voting adopted for the process, 28 senators (all PDP) voted for the original provision of the clause providing for INEC to expressly transmit election results electronically while 52 (all APC) voted for the amendment proposed by Senator Abdullahi.
