Controversy As Northern Group Says: “We Didn’t Buy APC Presidential Form for Jonathan”

Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has denied it never bought the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential nomination form for former President Goodluck Jonathan as being speculated, says the group spokesman, Abdulazeez Sulaiman.
On Monday,  a certain Fulani group purchased the 100 million naira presidential form for Jonathan to be part of the 2023 Presidential election.

However, denying the report, CNG, through it’s spokesperson Suleiman said: “The attention of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has been drawn to a piece of deliberately confusing report that has been trending since early evening of Monday, May 9.

“We are particularly worried that the report which purportedly suggests that CNG has purchased the presidential nomination forms for former President Goodluck Jonathan was broadcast by such reputable outlets.“We are therefore compelled to make the following clarifications for the benefit of the media and the general public.“We have since advanced from being addressed as an obscure Coalition and assumed the status of a proper name having made a mark as the strongest voice in Northern Nigeria.“For a very long time, CNG has come to be properly addressed as “The Coalition of Northern Groups ” and no longer “A Coalition of Northern Groups ” as featured in the trending report.” We are aware of the recent proliferation of coalitions across the North and in Nigeria as a whole (mostly out of mischief), but we make bold to say categorically that the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has never since inception been involved in partisanship not to mention picking a particular candidate and purchasing forms for him.“For the avoidance of doubt, the CNG is still committed to the search for a competent, credible Nigerian leader with the capacity to justly and fairly take all of us through and out of our current limitations.
“We advise the newborn coalitions to device a means of identification quite apart from the CNG and appreciate the concerns of our followers and supporters who have been calling us for clarification.”

  • Jonathan Rejects APC  N100m Nomination Form  Bought By Northern Supporters

Jonathan Rejects APC  N100m Nomination Form  Bought By Northern Supporters

An aide to the former President Goodluck Jonathan has dissociated his boss from the N100 million Nomination form, which he said was simply bought in his name on Monday.
Jonathan, who was President from 2010 to 1015 before he was defeated by the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, is seen as  a  leader of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) the platform under which he was president.
In a telephone chat with journalists shortly after the news of the alleged payment of N100 million for the APC nomination form broke, Jonathan’s spokesman, Ike Eze,  said:  ”Don’t mind them; they are on their own.”

Eze, wrote in a statement, dripping with anger: “It has come to our notice that a group has purportedly purchased Presidential  Nomination and Expression of Interest forms, of the All Progressives Congress APC, in the name of former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

“We wish to categorically state that Dr. Jonathan was not aware of this bid and did not authorize it. We want to state that if the former President wanted to contest an election, he would make his intentions clear to the public and will not enter through the back door.

“While we appreciate the overwhelming request by a cross-section of Nigerians, for Dr. Jonathan to make himself available for the 2023 Presidential election, we wish to state, that he has not in anyway, committed himself to this request. Buying a presidential aspiration form in the name Dr. Jonathan without his consent, knowing the position he had held in this country, is considered an insult to his person. The general public is therefore advised to disregard it.”

A coalition of northern socio-cultural groups has purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) N100million Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for Jonathan to contest for the 2023 presidency.
The groups, said to also be of Fulani extraction, picked the forms from the party’s organising secretary at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, on Monday evening.
There have been speculations that Jonathan was preparing to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and seek the presidential ticket of the party.

However, some Nigerians, including human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, argued that his candidature would breach the constitution.
Falana had based his position on Section 137 (3) of the Constitution, which provides as follows: A person who was sworn in to complete the term for which another person was elected as president shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term.

Mr Sanwo-Olu is seeking another four years in office that will expire in 2027.

His re-election efforts are expected to be unchallenged within the APC as the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos, has reportedly endorsed him.

Lagos, Ogun Form Historic Joint Development Commission

A new alliance order that will accelerate integration of physical and socio-economic developments of both Lagos and Ogun states was sealed on Monday, with the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of Lagos-Ogun Joint Development Commission by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The MoU signing event, held at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, marked a new beginning in bilateral relationship between the neighbouring states, which also share socio-cultural backgrounds.

They agreed to work on seven key areas of mutual interests, which are expected to boost security, commerce, urbanisation, infrastructure and also solve boundary disputes.

Members of executive councils of both states witnessed the historic event, which was also attended by federal and state legislators, private sector players, political leaders, youth groups and traditional rulers led by the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.

The creation of the joint commission was the culmination of an informal discussion between the two governors on maximising socio-economic benefits for citizens of their states based on comparative advantages and shared interests.

Sanwo-Olu described the two states as Siamese twins connected by geography, commerce and cultural affinities, saying the synergy was to explore common development issues to stimulate growth.

The MoU, Lagos State governor said, would enable the two states to mutually tackle issues prevalent in key economic sectors, including transportation, the environment, housing, health, infrastructure and security.

He said: “The Memorandum of Understanding being signed today is a game changer that will transform the urban agglomeration that exists between Lagos and Ogun states. We are driven by the desire to stimulate socio-economic growth, bridge development gaps and ensure that Lagos’ megacity status is complemented by pervasive infrastructural development even in boundary towns.

“It has become obvious that the best way to accelerate socio-economic development in both states is by embracing a more collaborative approach for growth, development and urban sustainability. Regardless of the challenges, we are determined to build more livable and stable cities. Our goal is to build sustainable urban cities, where the residents of both states will have a sense of belonging, embrace participatory governance, and recognise their role in achieving solid urban economies.”

The joint commission, Sanwo-Olu pointed out, is a sustainable development agenda under which Lagos and Ogun will combine resources to meet the socio-economic needs of the people and prepare for the future.

He listed areas of partnership to include infrastructural development in boundary cities, revenue and taxation remittances, trade and investment, resolution of boundary disputes; security intelligence sharing, environmental and physical planning, emergency and disaster management, inland waterways management, traffic management and food security.

After signing the MoU, the governor said the next step was to establish a joint committee that would implement the terms of the agreement and formally send bills to Houses of Assembly in both states to generate statutory support for the establishment of the economic integration commission.

He said: “The common goal is to provide good governance and make life more meaningful for the electorate, and that is our driving force. We must never forget that, as Nigerians, we are all interconnected in one way or the other, and the fastest way to accelerate socio-economic growth and create an equitable society is by uniting to combat our challenges.”

Governor Abiodun, on his part, said the MoU was the resolve and deliberate methodical efforts of two “forward-thinking” states, stressing that the initiative would be a success as it was the first time Lagos and Ogun would have a formal, structured framework of bilateral engagement that would be backed by legislation.

The governor said the MoU took cognizance of the development envisioned by the Prof. Akin Mabogunje Committee on Redeployment of Lagos Megacity Region Plan submitted to the federal government in 2006.

He said the development imperatives needed to be streamlined for the two states to be focused on sustaining common goals and future growth.

Abiodun said: “The MoU we are signing is a culmination of various efforts by state and non-state actors who have seen beyond the geographical delineation of our states. We are cognizant of the fact that Ogun State is the only neighbour that Lagos has and that we are a natural overflow of Lagos. There is no way development in Lagos would not have a spiral effect in Ogun or vice versa.

“Ogun and Lagos states are like two rivers flowing onto each other. It is very difficult to identify which of the rivers is actually flowing onto the other. Institutions, such as the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Customs Service and others have already recognised the Siamese relationship between our two states and have always grouped Lagos and Ogun as one zone under their respective High Commands.”

Chief Economic Adviser to the Ogun State Government and Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Ogunbadejo, described the event as “a collaboration of giants”, noting that the partnership would lead to transformative progress of both states and prosperity of their citizens.

Lagos Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyo Onigbanjo, SAN, said the letters of the agreement were to create an economic hub that would be second to none in the federation.

Oba Gbadebo commended the two governors for the initiative, describing the event as “a new beginning” for the two states in exploring their shared prosperity.

The monarch said Lagos and Ogun would now jointly address issues of mutual interest, especially in transportation.

  • Road to Redemption in Ondo Has Kicked Off –Eddy Olafeso

Road to Redemption in Ondo Has Kicked Off –Eddy Olafeso

Former National Vice Chairman (South West) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a leading gubernatorial aspirant in Ondo State, Dr. Eddy Eniola Olafeso Thursday took his nomination form at the Wadata Plaza in Abuja saying the road to redemption in the state has begun.

Olafeso who had resigned as the vice chairman of the party told party faithful that the road to redemption has kicked off.

“Today marks a critical step in the journey to redress the lopsided, debilitating and decaying state of infrastructure, education, social and human capital/capacity development that have dogged every sphere of the Ondo state milieu,” Olafeso said. “The political experience in Ondo state as presently configured is not only skewed in appointment towards a particular community in such a flagrant violation of the spirit of the Federal Character of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended but also in the few vaunted infrastructure deliberately abandoning critical areas of governance.”

He added: “We have all it takes to be rich as a state and it is tragic that we are still a state waiting for federal allocations despite all what we’ve been blessed with.”

While reassuring party faithful of his commitment to the growth and unity of the Party, Olafeso said: “I am a team player. I am an Olympian. That we are many competing will not tear the party apart. People now know that the ticket is worth something and that’s responsible for everyone coming up to jostle for it. It is a testament to how great we’ve built this party in the last four years.”

Olafeso, accompanied by PDP bigwigs in Ondo State, was received by the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus ably represented by the Deputy Chairman (South), Elder Yemi Akinwonmi. Former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele, Zonal Secretary of PDP in the South West, Rev. Bunmi Jenyo, and the Organising Secretary of Afenifere, Chief Kole Omololu, former House of Assembly members, PDP LG Chairmen and delegates were some of the dignitaries in attendance.

“We are primed for this job. Our experiences in the public and private sectors have equipped us for the art of governance. Our dues have been paid sufficiently. Our state is fast drifting into the abyss and we must do all we can to rescue this State. The whole state is looking up to us, we must not disappoint them with our choice.” He told delegates at the event.

Faboyede, the state PDP Chairman had earlier eulogized Olafeso for being a loyal party man who stood by him through thick and thin. “On numerous occasions, we’ve had to run to Olorogun Eddy Olafeso to keep the party afloat in the state and he never for once said no to our demands. While we were persecuted, he stood by us, visited us and attended court sessions in solidarity. He’s a worthy leader.” He said.

Olafeso is now cleared to proceed to the next phase which is the collection of the PDP nomination form at the Wadata Plaza, Abuja national headquarters of PDP.
