Northern Youths Urge Christians to Shun Anti-May 29 Handover Activity

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals has urged Christians to distance themselves from any anti-May 29 handover activity.

The Christian body also advised Christians to reflect on the virtues of Jesus Christ’s death on the cross and emulate them in their daily lives.

The youths pleaded with Christians to also use this opportunity to reflect on the state of the nation and the challenges.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Chairman, Northern Christian Youth Professionals, Isaac Abrak, the body urged those who did not vote for the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to put aside their differences and support him in his efforts to improve the lives of all Nigerians.

The statement reads in part: “The Northern Christian Youth Professionals extend warm wishes to all Nigerians on the occasion of the Easter celebration. As we celebrate this season of love, renewal, and hope, we call on all citizens.

“In light of the Presidential election, we congratulate His Excellency, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory. We believe that under his leadership, Nigeria can make significant progress in improving our economy and security.

“We are aware that not all Nigerians voted for President Elect HE Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but we urge those who did not vote for him to put aside their differences and support him in his efforts to improve the lives of all Nigerians….

“However, we note with concern the recent calls by some individuals and groups to shelve the handover of power to President Elect HE Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We strongly condemn such calls as they are enemies of democracy, peaceful coexistence, and a united Nigeria. Nigerians have spoken through the ballot, and it is important that we respect the will of the people.”

  • APC  Northern Christians Vow to Frustrate Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Say It’s Dangerous for Nigeria’s Unity

APC  Northern Christians Vow to Frustrate Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Say It’s Dangerous for Nigeria’s Unity

Northern Christian members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have formally rejected the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket for the 2023 election.

According to them, after a summit in Abuja on Friday,  the ticket goes against all the principles of equity, fairness and justice.

Joining party stalwarts such as Yakubu Dogara and Babachir Lawal were members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and clergymen who said Christians in the North must rise against the injustice of the ruling party.

They opined that the ticket was an attempt to further divide the country.

“This is very divisive and must be rejected by all patriotic Nigerians,” Mr Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said.

“Also implied in this ticket is the insinuation that Northern Muslims are not willing to vote for a ticket that has a Christian on it and on which they are not represented.

“It is our belief that Northern Muslims would have seen the justice in a Muslim-Christian ticket and would have given it their overwhelming support had the party been inclined to do so.

“Sadly, the party chose to go the divisive line.

“A corollary to this mindset is that Christians should also not vote for a ticket on which there are no Christians.”

On his part, Dogara, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, said Nigeria is at a dangerous crossroad if an important issue like religion is not properly balanced to reflect the interest of all parties in the country.

Controversy As Northern Group Says: “We Didn’t Buy APC Presidential Form for Jonathan”

Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has denied it never bought the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential nomination form for former President Goodluck Jonathan as being speculated, says the group spokesman, Abdulazeez Sulaiman.
On Monday,  a certain Fulani group purchased the 100 million naira presidential form for Jonathan to be part of the 2023 Presidential election.

However, denying the report, CNG, through it’s spokesperson Suleiman said: “The attention of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has been drawn to a piece of deliberately confusing report that has been trending since early evening of Monday, May 9.

“We are particularly worried that the report which purportedly suggests that CNG has purchased the presidential nomination forms for former President Goodluck Jonathan was broadcast by such reputable outlets.“We are therefore compelled to make the following clarifications for the benefit of the media and the general public.“We have since advanced from being addressed as an obscure Coalition and assumed the status of a proper name having made a mark as the strongest voice in Northern Nigeria.“For a very long time, CNG has come to be properly addressed as “The Coalition of Northern Groups ” and no longer “A Coalition of Northern Groups ” as featured in the trending report.” We are aware of the recent proliferation of coalitions across the North and in Nigeria as a whole (mostly out of mischief), but we make bold to say categorically that the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has never since inception been involved in partisanship not to mention picking a particular candidate and purchasing forms for him.“For the avoidance of doubt, the CNG is still committed to the search for a competent, credible Nigerian leader with the capacity to justly and fairly take all of us through and out of our current limitations.
“We advise the newborn coalitions to device a means of identification quite apart from the CNG and appreciate the concerns of our followers and supporters who have been calling us for clarification.”

  • Jonathan Rejects APC  N100m Nomination Form  Bought By Northern Supporters

Jonathan Rejects APC  N100m Nomination Form  Bought By Northern Supporters

An aide to the former President Goodluck Jonathan has dissociated his boss from the N100 million Nomination form, which he said was simply bought in his name on Monday.
Jonathan, who was President from 2010 to 1015 before he was defeated by the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, is seen as  a  leader of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) the platform under which he was president.
In a telephone chat with journalists shortly after the news of the alleged payment of N100 million for the APC nomination form broke, Jonathan’s spokesman, Ike Eze,  said:  ”Don’t mind them; they are on their own.”

Eze, wrote in a statement, dripping with anger: “It has come to our notice that a group has purportedly purchased Presidential  Nomination and Expression of Interest forms, of the All Progressives Congress APC, in the name of former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

“We wish to categorically state that Dr. Jonathan was not aware of this bid and did not authorize it. We want to state that if the former President wanted to contest an election, he would make his intentions clear to the public and will not enter through the back door.

“While we appreciate the overwhelming request by a cross-section of Nigerians, for Dr. Jonathan to make himself available for the 2023 Presidential election, we wish to state, that he has not in anyway, committed himself to this request. Buying a presidential aspiration form in the name Dr. Jonathan without his consent, knowing the position he had held in this country, is considered an insult to his person. The general public is therefore advised to disregard it.”

A coalition of northern socio-cultural groups has purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) N100million Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for Jonathan to contest for the 2023 presidency.
The groups, said to also be of Fulani extraction, picked the forms from the party’s organising secretary at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, on Monday evening.
There have been speculations that Jonathan was preparing to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and seek the presidential ticket of the party.

However, some Nigerians, including human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, argued that his candidature would breach the constitution.
Falana had based his position on Section 137 (3) of the Constitution, which provides as follows: A person who was sworn in to complete the term for which another person was elected as president shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term.

  • Northern Elders Forum to Buhari: Leave Bishop Kukah Alone, Face Nigeria’s Security Challenges

Northern Elders Forum to Buhari: Leave Bishop Kukah Alone, Face Nigeria’s Security Challenges

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has told President Muhammadu Buhari administration to focus on how to solve the country’s insecurity challenges rather than blame Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese for Nigeria’s woes.
The position of the group was made known by the Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who faulted the Presidency over the way it responded to the criticisms.
His comment trails the Presidency’s claim that Kukah had a hatred for the Muhammadu Buhari administration and was working with the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party to stop the sale of Super Tucano fighter jets to the Nigerian Air Force.
The group further said the federal government should ensure that the military operations satisfy the basic standards demanded by the weapon suppliers in order to avoid what gave rise to delays in weapons procurement from Western countries.
It reiterated the earlier call for President Muhammadu Buhari’s resignation if unable to resolve the nation’s security problems.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Baba-Ahmed said Nigeria has a problem with procuring weapons because of the conduct of the armed forces and related agencies on human rights issues, dealing with prisoners of war and people caught up in conflicts.
He said: “You know, the presidency spokespersons have a way of deflecting criticism by making it personal. When you say that there is a shortfall in the quality of government, they find something to stick you with.
“People like Bishop Kukah and I, are used to this. We don’t take it seriously. This organisation should be criticised and must be criticised, and those who are ready to do so should be willing to take some of the words that Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina recycle every once in a while when we point out certain facts about the failings of President in terms of securing the country.
“But the truth is, maybe they know this, maybe they don’t know, the Nigerian government has problems procuring weaponry from Western countries, because these countries, in most cases, have standards regarding conduct by their armed forces and related agencies, in terms of dealing on human rights issues, dealing with prisoners of war, dealing with populations caught up in conflicts.
“Everybody knows this. They will not sell you one bullet unless they are satisfied that you’ve met certain criteria. And they have raised issues over and over and over again. The Nigerian government knows this. But they need to improve the conduct of the Nigerian military, in the fight against the insurgency, against terrorists. They know this.
“And when someone points them out, either it is because of lethargy, it takes them a long time to adjust, or perhaps the challenges of the conflict don’t allow them to make adjustments while they’re also fighting, I don’t know what it is, but whatever it is, it is true that if we have met, or comply with standards, set by countries that should give us weapons, well, sell us weapons, we would have a lot more weapons that we have now.
“So, whether it comes from Bishop Kukah, or it comes from me, we made this point. We want to buy weapons from some countries and improve the way we wage this war. It can be done, it must be done if you want these weapons.
“You certainly don’t want to go the option of some other members of the government who say procure weapons from anywhere in the world, or just bring in mercenaries to fight a war for you.
“So, I agree with Bishop Kukah that the government needs to review its attitude, some of those issues raised by countries that are creating problems, well, seemingly creating a problem for us in terms of selling weapons, and that the onus is on us to improve those conditions. It’s fact and we need it now.
“We must not go to the 2023 elections with the current state of insecurity or worse state insecurity, not just because of the elections, but because life is getting worse by the day and it’s time to reverse this trend.
“We cannot continue to live like this. Every inch of this country has one form of security challenge or the other and there are solutions to them. It cannot be that there are no solutions to the insecurities.
“There must be something wrong in the way we are running the country. We should say so. We should raise our voices and demand that the people we voted into office, the President, the National Assembly, and governors, they must do better. We can’t live like rats hiding in holes and running away every year from criminals.
“We just can’t. We’re tired. If they can’t operate in the country, there is an option. There is a provision in the constitution for stepping down if you can’t perform the most basic function available to you, which is to protect and secure citizens.
“That’s what we’re saying but a few people thought that extreme but it is a statement of fact.”

  • Ohanaeze Threatens to Declare Biafra If Northern President Emerges in 2023

Ohanaeze Threatens to Declare Biafra If Northern President Emerges in 2023

A faction of the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has warned that a Northern presidency in 2023 will further  fuel the declarations for Oduduwa and Biafra nations.

A statement issued by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the secretary-general of the group, said the Northern governors are being selfish with their clamour  for Northern Presidency in 2023.

The statement reads: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide maintains that attempts to jettison the rotational presidency in 2023, and the North insisting to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari will be unfavourable and weakens the unity and stability in the country as it will favour the declarations of Oduduwa and Biafra nations by 2024.

”Northern Governors’ miscalculation on 2023 and meandering on blind excitements of opposing the position of southern Governors’ standpoints has put the Northern Governors as exponents of Nigeria’s breakup.

“If another Northerner succeeds President Buhari in 2023, he/she might not be able to superintend over the affairs of the country as Nigeria might face brutal challenges from secessionist groups with full backing from ethnic groups as a result of a revolt against the injustice in the South and excesses of the North.

“Ndigbo may join with IPOB, to declare for Biafra restoration in the event of any conspiracy against the 2023 Igbo Presidency.

“Northern Governors should apologise to Nigerians for these subversive and provocative responses to 2023 Southern Presidency or face the consequences of being unable to read the mood of the nation which favours a southern presidency from the Igbo bloc.”

The new wave of reactions came in response to the resolution of governors of the 19 Northern states over the rotational presidency and VAT.

The northern governors rejected the position of their Southern colleagues that the 2023 presidency should be zoned to the Southern part of the country, arguing that the presidency is a democratic office and not a rotational position.

The Southern governors had in a meeting in July in Lagos State demanded that power must shift to their region.

However, arising from an emergency meeting with Northern traditional rulers at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, on Monday, the Northern Governors Forum said the region could not be compelled to give up a democratically elected office that could be sought by any person irrespective of where he comes from.

The forum added that though some Northern governors had earlier expressed views for a power-shift to three geo-political zones in the South, with a view to promoting unity and peace in the nation, the statement by the Southern Governors Forum that the Presidency must go to the South is unacceptable.

  • Why Northern Governors Kick Against VAT Laws in Rivers, Lagos

Why Northern Governors Kick Against VAT Laws in Rivers, Lagos

Northern  governors  have kicked against the establishment of Value Added Tax (VAT) laws by Rivers and Lagos states.

They claimed that the enactment of VAT law by states will lead to multiple taxation and push up prices of goods and services.

The governors under the auspices of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), said VAT laws in states would lead to the collapse of inter-state trade.

In a communique read by its Chairman, Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, they described their southern colleagues as confused on VAT collection.

Rivers and Lagos states have enacted VAT laws. The VAT has become a legal issue between the Federal Government and the two states over which tier of government has right to collect the revenue.

The NSGF said Lagos accounts for over 50 per cent of VAT collection because most of the telecommunication companies, banks, manufacturing and other trading activities have their headquarters domiciled in the state.

Noting its constraint by the pending VAT matter before the courts, the forum stressed the importance of speaking on it to educate the general public.

In the communique, the governors said they will only respect the outcome of Supreme Court’s ruling on the VAT row.

The communique reads: “The Northern State Governors Forum considered the on-going National debate on the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT). As responsible leaders while we are constraint by the fact that the matter is sub judice we however for the purposes of educating the public make the following observations:

“The judgement of the Federal high Court calls to question the constitutionality of VAT, withholding tax, education tax, Niger Delta Development Commission, National Information Technology Development Agency, 13% derivation, National Economic Development Council and many other currently levied and collected by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Federal Inlands Revenue Service.

    “Rivers and Lagos State Government had enacted their own VAT laws and the Southern Governors Forum have expressed support for this course of action;

“VAT is being confused by these State Government as a sales tax. If every State enacted its own VAT Law, multiple taxation will result in increases of prices of goods and services and collapsed in interstate trade. VAT is not a production tax like excise, but terminal tax which is paid by the ultimate consumer.

“Another confusion is ignoring observation above and its ‘overall effect’. The reason Lagos account for our 50% Vat collection is because most of the telecommunication companies, Banks, manufacturing and other trading activities have their headquarters in Lagos with the resultant and wrongful attribution of VAT.

“Until and unless the Supreme Court pronounces judgement on the substantive matter between Rivers State and Federal Government, the matter is subjudice and Northern States Governors Forum would respect this.”

  • PDP May Lose 2023 Presidency If Northern Candidate Emerges –Doyin Okupe

PDP May Lose 2023 Presidency If Northern Candidate Emerges –Doyin Okupe

Dr Doyin Okupe, former spokesperson to Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has warned that the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, may lose the 2023 presidential election if the party presents  a northern candidate for the election.

Okupe argued that the zoning arrangement in the PDP ended with the 2019 presidential election but that some people within the party are insisting on presenting a northern candidate for the 2023 poll.

He said major politicians were defecting from the party because of the issue of a northern presidential candidate.

He expressed the fears that the party could collapse before 2023 if the gale of defections continues.

Okupe said: “The gale of defections in the Peoples Democratic Party has nothing to do with any form of crisis. It is just part of happenings when a general election is approaching

“Those who have defected have personal issues with party leadership, especially on the zoning arrangement.

“The issue of zoning shouldn’t be a basis for defections at this time because the committee set up to determine that will soon conclude their assignment and submit their report

“However, there is a strong indication that the party is erroneously tilting towards zoning the presidency to the North.

“Zoning is a veritable instrument that ensures equity and balancing in the nation, gives hope and confidence and support to our national unity.

“The zoning arrangement which the PDP started since 1998 was based on the assumption that the party will be in power consistently but the moment it lost power in 2015, automatically the arrangement has to be reviewed in view of the development

“When the PDP lost power, there was a southern president in power. If the party didn’t lose power and completed in 2019, zoning would kick in and power would have shifted to the North.

“However, the party that won the election presented a northern candidate who by 2023 would have ruled for eight years.

“We still carried on as if the former arrangement was still in place in 2019 and it was justifiable because within the PDP at that time for us to put forward a northern candidate.

“In 2023, with APC having ruled for eight years with a northern candidate, it will be preposterous, unjust, uncaring and blatant for the PDP to zone the presidential ticket to the north because the arrangement expired the moment our party lost power in 2019.

“There should be a reset of the zoning arrangement in 2023. It does not make sense to replace a northern government of eight years with another northern government for another eight years, it doesn’t make sense.

“That is why the PDP should zone the presidency to the South. The southern governors who are the leaders of the South had spoken, we should listen to then.

“It will be folly, reckless and insensitive for any political party to ignore the position of the southern governors

“Some people who think they control wealth are talking within the party while reasonable and strong men are keeping quiet. Some are being given money to keep quiet.

“The struggle between Secondus and Wike is unnecessary. It ought not to have degenerated to this level. Our party may lose again if we zone presidency to the North again in 2023, ” Okupe added.

  • NDA Attack: Sack NSA Monguno Now, Northern Elders Tell Buhari

NDA Attack: Sack NSA Monguno Now, Northern Elders Tell Buhari

Northern Elders have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to  immediate sack the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (Rtd) over the attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).×

The group attributed Tuesday’s morning attack by bandits, which left two military officers dead and one other abducted to failure of Nigeria’s intelligence network.

The Nigerian Army had earlier confirmed the killing of two of its officers and abduction of a senior officer (who was found dead later) at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Afaka, Kaduna State.

Witnesses said the bandits came in a large number in the early hours of Tuesday, adding that apart from the officers killed and kidnapped, some others sustained gunshot injuries and are receiving treatment at the NDA hospital.

The group, in a statement following the attack, also sought an in-depth review of the entire security architecture as according to them, the entire security chiefs must bear the blame.

The group under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development (CNEPD), in the statement by its national coordinator, Engr. Zana Goni, while blaming President Muhammadu Buhari for leaving Monguno behind at the time he replaced service chiefs, expressed unflinching support to the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Maintaining that their position was based on patriotism to the country, the elders insisted that it was time for the President to do away with Monguno following the worsening insecurity in the country.

The deteriorating security situation, according to the Coalition, is a sign that Monguno, who manages the nation’s security was not on top of his game.

The statement berated stakeholders in the region over what the group described as “their long silence in the face of unbearable criminal acts by armed herdsmen and insecurity across the country ‘thereby giving a bad image of the region.”

“We find it once more expedient to comment on the worsening security situation in the country, especially the latest attack on a military formation, the Nigerian Defence Academy, which is the institution where future military leaders are trained.

“We woke up to the sad news of the attack on the NDA, leaving two officers killed and another abducted by bandits with heavy hearts. If it was not the confirmation of this unbelievable action by the Academy’s spokesperson, Bashir Jajira, we would have still been in doubt.

“The fact that a fortified military institution could be so easily invaded by armed militias without resistance has left us with the conclusion that no part of this country and no citizen,no matter his or status is safe again.

“Without mincing words, we wish to attribute this ugly development to intelligence failure and gaps in the capacity of our armed forces. We wish to strongly say here that the attack is a slap on the Nigeria intelligence community and the armed forces.

“The retention of the National Security Adviser, General Babagana Monguno at the time the president listened to the voice of reason and replaced service chiefs, may be contributing to the continuous deteriorating security situation in the country.

“Given the situation, we wish to humbly and respectively appeal to our dear President, Muhammadu Buhari, to as a matter of urgent national importance, replace the NSA, whose tenure since his assumption of office, has been characterised by heightened Boko Haram activities, banditry, kidnap for ransom and other heinous crimes without end in sight.

We reinstate unequivocally that Monguno has failed to provide useful advice to address the scourging insecurity in the country and therefore, does not deserve continuous stay in office.

“As Northern elders,we have found it very important to call on President Buhari to remove the National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno (retd), whose office and responsibilities are critical to the achievement of comprehensive security all over the country but hasn’t used the high esteem of his office in any productive ways since his appointment as NSA.

‘The reason for this call is not farfetched. We believe that Major-Gen Monguno was part of the gross failure associated with the tenure of the former security chiefs and his continued presence in office will make the success Buhari intended to achieve with the changes very difficult, if not completely impossible.

‘It is important that the NSA be replaced and the security architecture of the nation reviewed so that the process of injecting fresh blood can be completed.

‘We believe that the service chiefs need a clean slate to succeed as to avoid being tied to the springs of the past fatal failures. This call is both patriotic and totally apolitical as expected from a responsible group of elders in our dear region

‘It would be to the highest interests of Nigeria for the president to heed this call and act on it immediately,” the group stated.
