The music world suffered another tragic blow, on Saturday, as music legend, Prof. Victor Uwaifo, bade the world bye.
The multi-talented music icon died on Saturday in Benin-City at the age of 80.
His family, and Nigeria’s music circuit are reeling in profound sorrow and shock at the passing of Uwaifo whose timeless 1965 work, Joromi, won the first gold disc in Africa. He went ahead to win seven other gold discs in Guitar boy, Arabade, Ekassa series and Akwete music.
The grieving family of the departed legend was yet to make an official statement as at the time of this report. They, however, promised to make an official release in due course.
Born on March 1, 1941, Uwaifo, who held a Ph.D in Architectural Sculpture, was a Professor of in the same discipline, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor, music legend, and the first Honorable Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Nigeria. He served as Commissioner for Arts and Culture in Edo State between 2001 and 2003.
Uwaifo, renowned for his mastery of the guitar and the flute, won many musical awards both nationally and internationally, dazzled millions of his fans across the world throughout his career with his stagecraft and music prowess.
The first professional musician to be awarded the National Merit Honours of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), some of Uwaifo’s super hits include: ‘Mami Water’, ‘Joromi’ and ‘Guitar Boy’.
