A flood of sorrow, and deluge of tributes swept across the world entertainment circuit, Tuesday, as the legendary Tina Turner bade the world bye.

The Grammy-winning performer, according to reports, died at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long illness. Her spokesperson, Bernard Doherty, who broke the sad news, said the legend died at 83 but did not reveal the cause of death.

“With her (death), the world loses a music legend and role model,” Doherty said.

The announcement triggered a storm of tributes from across the world. Tributes poured from musicians, actors and athletes, even politicians.

Elton John said on Instagram: “We have lost one of the world’s most exciting and electric performers. A total legend on record and on stage. She was untouchable. Condolences to Erwin and her family. The saddest news.”

Angela Bassett, who played Turner in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do With It” said: “How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world? Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like. Her final words to me — for me — were “You never mimicked me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.” I shall hold these words close to my heart for the rest of

    my days.”

This is how Actor Maria Shriver mourned the passing of one of the greatest performers of all time on Twitter: “Tina Turner was iconic, talented, and fierce. What a journey. What a life, filled with great highs and great lows. She left an abusive marriage. She found love again. She made her way in this world, selling millions of albums. She became a mother, she experienced terrible sadness, and she still kept going. She brought joy to so many, even when she was experiencing such tragedy. I’ve always admired her. I first met her as a teenager and followed her throughout her inspiring life. May we honor Tina, and may we continue to play her music loudly and dance!”

Mick Jagger, who performed with Turner during a show in 1985 and toured with the band in the 1960s. Here is his tribute:

“I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her.”

Barack Obama on Twitter, wrote: “Tina Turner was raw. She was powerful. She was unstoppable. And she was unapologetically herself—speaking and singing her truth through joy and pain; triumph and tragedy. Today we join fans around the world in honoring the Queen of Rock and Roll, and a star whose light will never fade.”

Emefiele Not Sacked, He’s in Switzerland for WEF –CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said it is not aware its Governor Godwin Emefiele has been sacked.

CBN’s spokesman Osita Nwanisobi said he read report of his purported sack in some media like everyone else.

He said: “I also heard the same way you heard it. Honestly, to me I’m not aware of that development”.

Other CBN staff also claimed they are not aware of Emefiele’s sack as widely reported.

However a bank staff said: “The Governor left to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland immediately after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) briefing”.

Social media platforms were saturated with the purported sack of Emefiele as CBN Governor on Wednesday morning.

But contacts at the CBN and Presidential Villa where the purported sacked would have emanated from all denied knowledge of the sack.

Switzerland Confirms Kidnap of Citizen in Nigeria

“The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs confirms the kidnapping of a Swiss citizen and his driver over the weekend in Nigeria,” a spokesman said, in a statement sent to AFP.

“The FDFA and the Swiss embassy in Abuja are in contact with the local authorities. The FDFA is coordinating activities with the various departments of the federal administration relevant to this type of case.

“For reasons of personal and data protection, the FDFA cannot provide further information.”

The Swiss national and another person were seized as they were coming from a farm on the Ibese-Itori road in Ogun state, Ogun police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi told AFP on Sunday.

“They were intercepted… Two of the bandits were killed, but they succeeded in abducting two, a Swiss national and another person,” he said.

“The police are on the trail of these people.”

Kidnappings occur mostly in the northwest and central states of Nigeria where heavily-armed criminal gangs operate. Foreign workers are occasionally targeted for abduction for ransom.

Kidnap gangs are just one of the challenges facing President Muhammadu Buhari’s security forces who are also battling a 12-year jihadist insurgency in the northeast of Africa’s most populous nation.

Gangs this year have targeted schools and colleges to snatch dozens of students at a time. Around 1,000 students have been abducted in a string of mass kidnappings since December, though most have been freed after negotiations with their captors.

The foreign ministry’s spokesman added: “The FDFA’s travel advice for Nigeria draws attention to the risk of politically or criminally motivated kidnappings across the country.”

The ministry’s website says that at the end of 2019, there were 222 Swiss nationals living in Nigeria.

More than 50 Swiss companies have operations in Nigeria, mainly in the south. These companies have made direct investments amounting to approximately $550 million and employ more than 7,000 people, the ministry says.

  • At OPU Europe Summit, Gani Adams, Amuda, Others, Drum Support For Restructuring

At OPU Europe Summit, Gani Adams, Amuda, Others, Drum Support For Restructuring

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has restated his belief in restructuring, saying it is the only option for unity and peace in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 2019 edition of Europe Summit, organized by the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) in Zurich, Switzerland, Adams said Nigerians in the diaspora have a role to play in projecting the image of the country positively to the world.

He urged the Federal Government to use the resolution of the 2014 National Conference, as well as the 1960-1963 Republican constitution as templates for restructuring.

The Yoruba generalissimo, also the global convener of the group which presently exists in 87 countries across the world, also charged all members of the group to cultivate the habit of building an enduring trust among members.

He insisted that  true federalism is  truly the best option for Nigeria.

Iba Adams, however, admitted that the recent partnership between the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and the Nigeria Police Force is beginning to yield positive results, saying the initiative has reduced the spate of insecurity in the southwest.

“We all have a stake in the Nigerian project because whatever happens to the Yoruba nation affects us, and whatever happens to Nigeria will definitely affect Africans and the world at large,”he told his audience. “Therefore, as the global convener of this noble group, my job is primarily to set the pace, as we continually promote and propagate the activities of our group.”

Aare Gani Adams also advised all members of the group to bring investors to Nigeria.

His words: “You are Nigeria’s ambassadors abroad. Bring your friends, bring investors to Nigeria. Let Nigeria feel your impact. Nigerians are looking forward to seeing you coming back home to develop your fatherland. We are expecting the best from you. It is when you bring your friends, business associates and investors that they can know, understand and appreciate the peculiar nature of the Yoruba people in Nigeria.”

In his remarks, the guest lecturer, Alhaji Mallami Azeez, spoke on the theme: Unity as a panacea for growth and development of the Yoruba.

He said recent happenings in the country have shown that Yorubas can only get it right when there is peace and unity in the country.

Azeez, who highlighted the roles of the traditional rulers in ensuring security and safety of the people at the grassroots, also appealed to southwest governors to support and cooperate with the traditional rulers in ensuring peace across the region.

“Efforts should be made to seek unity among the royal fathers, as well as all groups in the southwest because once they cooperate and work together as one big family, the region will definitely benefit from the new development,” the guest speaker posited.

Meanwhile, the Head of Chancery, Nigerian Embassy in Switzerland, Mrs. Oluwakemi Amuda, who represented the ambassador, tasked the group to do everything within its rank to  build strong economic ties across all the 87 countries where OPU is present.

She noted also that the relationship among members and countries should be based on mutual respect, and love, mostly, in the interest of the Yoruba race and Nigeria in particular.

She said: “As a group of Yoruba natives in the diaspora, I want to assure all members of OPU spreading across all the 87 countries in the world  that with all of you coming together as one big family, Nigeria will, no doubt, regains its pride of place among the comity of great nations of the world. We have the potentials to become one of the great countries in the world.”

In his remarks, the OPU Europe Coordinator, Akinrogun Victor Adewale, urged members  to be committed to the vision of the group, saying  OPU  will build strong ties, using the platform of the group to boost relationship  across all the globe.

“We are here to broaden the scope of our identity in the world and make good impact in the world,” he stated.

At the end of the summit, the group issued a communique. Part of the resolutions, as contained in the communique, is to encourage all the southwest governors to work on the unity of traditional rulers, and other groups in southwest, stating the need for effective security, unity and peace in Nigeria.

Members of the group in Europe present at the summit included:  the Europe Secretary, Mr. Jide Sanni, organizing secretary, Mr. Ojikutu, newly elected coordinator for Switzerland, Mr. Abdulsalam Akeem Babatunde, European Union adviser, Mr. Marc Oyetunde, European Union  Financial Secretary, Chief Gani Wahab, and Mrs. Oluwakemi Amuda, who led a powerful delegation of the Switzerland Embassy to the summit.
