Team Nigeria finished seventh in the final medal standings at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after an impressive campaign that saw the country claim 24 medals.
The Nigerian contingent, which competed across 10 sports, won 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals to emerge as the highest-ranked African nation at the Games.
Nigeria’s first gold medal came through Esther Nworgu, who delivered a dominant performance to win the women’s lightweight para powerlifting title.
Ezekiel Nathaniel was another standout performer, securing gold in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Goodness Nwachukwu set a new world record en route to winning the women’s F42 discus throw title.
Idris Rilwan also struck gold in para powerlifting, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put.
Samuel Ogazi further boosted Nigeria’s medal haul with gold in the men’s 400m, while Ruth Didih and Hauwa Lawal claimed gold medals in weightlifting.
Chukwuebuka Umoafia also topped the podium in the men’s weightlifting event to add another gold medal to Nigeria’s impressive tally.
Australia dominated the overall medal standings, finishing first with 65 gold, 41 silver and 52 bronze medals.
England placed second with 26 gold, 41 silver and 35 bronze medals, while Canada finished third with 18 gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze medals.
Nigeria’s performance saw the country finish ahead of all other African nations, underlining the strength of its athletes across athletics, para-sports and weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
