US President Donald Trump will attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain and is expected to present the trophy to the winners alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
The White House confirmed that Trump will be present at Sunday’s final in New Jersey, despite the president not attending any of the tournament’s 102 matches held across the United States, Canada and Mexico so far.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president was looking forward to attending the decisive match.
“We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the president looks forward to attending. This is a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage.”
Leavitt also confirmed that Trump is scheduled to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City ahead of the final.
Earlier this week, Infantino revealed that plans were in place for Trump to join him in presenting the trophy after the match. Speaking to Blue Sport, the FIFA president said presenting the trophy together with the leader of the host nation has traditionally been part of the World Cup final ceremony.
“Hopefully we’ll present the trophy together in the final. That’s always been the plan, and that’s how it’s always been done in the past — the president of the country where the final is held presents the trophy together with the FIFA president.”
Addressing why Trump had not attended any matches during the tournament, Infantino suggested the US president had other responsibilities to manage.
“I suppose he still has a few other things to do…”
Infantino added that he remained in regular contact with Trump and his administration regarding the organisation of the World Cup.
The final, which will see Argentina and Spain battle for football’s biggest prize, will take place in New Jersey on Sunday.
