UNIJOS Mourns as 8 Students Perish in Road Crash
A monumental tragedy hit the tin-city of Jos Thursday morning as a bus carrying students of the University of Jos collided with a trailer leaving eight people dead.
Seven of the victims, according to reports, died on the spot while the remaining one passed in the hospital.
Quoting eyewitnesses, the Punch newspaper reported that the tragic accident occurred opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The bus had eleven people on board at the time of the accident. Three male survivors are receiving treatment in the hospital.
Though there was no official confirmation on the cause of the disaster at the time of this report, an eyewitness who pleaded not to be named said the tragedy was caused by over-speeding and wrongful overtaking by the bus driver.
Mr Peter Longsan, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.
Longsan said, “Today, 11th December 2025, FRSC Plateau State Sector Command received a distress call at about 0230 hours, reporting a road traffic crash opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road, Jos.
“The crash involved two vehicles, a trailer and a bus. Eleven people were on board the bus and were said to be students of the University of Jos. On arrival, seven people were suspected to be dead on the spot, and they were eventually certified dead by a doctor.
“Another victim later died in the hospital, bringing the total number of deceased to eight. Three others are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. All victims were males.”
The Sector Commander of FRSC, Plateau State Command, Mr. Olajide Mogaji, urged motorists, especially drivers, to avoid night trips, excessive speed, dangerous driving, driving under the influence, and driving when fatigued or unwell, noting that these are major causes of fatalities in road crashes.
“The government needs you alive and wants you to enjoy life to the fullest this festive season and beyond,” he said.
He further urged members of the public to call the FRSC toll-free emergency number 122 to report crashes or other road emergencies.
