Codeine: Youths Sniff Latrines, Lizard Dung Too

The Basic Registry and Information System in Nigeria (BRISIN), has called for the ban on the use of pit latrine as many youths now sniff latrines as a substitute for codeine.

This was contained in a statement by the Coordinator, Health and Environment, Dr Misbau Lawal, on Thursday in Ilorin.

According to him, following the ban of codeine-based syrups, youths resorted to sniffing pit latrine and lizard dung as a substitute.

He urged community leaders to sensitize their people and ensure they dispose of lizard dung in their environment by burying it.

According to him, lizard dung comprises the uric acid and all reptiles excrete uric acid.

“The vapour of decomposing human dung has the effect on the central nervous system, producing narcosis just like codeine when inhaled.

“People using pit latrine should dehydrate it with sulphuric acid or the government can recycle human defecation to make biogas for economic benefits,” he said.

He further appealed to the government to ensure codeine was not allowed into the country through border routes.

According to him, every drastic measure must be utilised to save the youths of the nation and the government must be committed.

BRISIN is an integrated system for the collection, storage and distribution of information to support the management of the economy.
