Bandits again! Strike Kogi School, Kill Vice Principal, 2 Others

It was fresh horror on Wednesday as armed bandits struck another school, this time-Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing three persons.

The dead included a vice principal and a six-year-old child.

According to reports, the blood-baying criminals had invaded the school at around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, making people to run in every direction for safety. But there was no report of any mass abduction as the dare-devil bandits were repelled by the police in collaboration with other security agencies and local vigilantes.

Spokesperson of the Kogi State Police Command, Afusat Saliu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, confirmed the attack in a statement, revealing that a large number of armed bandits, operating on about 40 motorcycles, had invaded the school possibly with the intention of abducting students and other residents.

ASP Saliu disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kabba ‘A’ Division, swiftly mobilised a joint security response team after receiving distress calls, deploying personnel from the Police Mobile Force and tactical unit.

She, however, added that military personnel and local vigilante groups stationed in the area also joined the operation.

“The combined security operatives engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun duel, forcing the criminals to flee into the surrounding bush,” Saliu said in the statement.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there is presently no conclusive evidence of a successful mass abduction of students or other residents.

“However, investigations and ongoing assessments are continuing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”

But the police spokesperson confirmed that three persons were killed during the attack.

“They include Mr Ganiyu Anifowose, the Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70 years; and Sunday Ayele, aged six years,” the statement said; sadly.

But one of the invaders was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Meanwhile, the statement said the Commissioner of Police in the state has ordered sustained bush-combing operations to hunt the fleeing bandits and prevent further attacks.

The Kogi State Police Command has appealed to citizens to remain calm even as he assured them of protection. But the Command urged the public to help the police with credible information that could help them in the investigation.

“Further developments will be communicated as investigations and operations progress,” the statement further informed.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday, commended the Nigerian Navy for its seven decades of commitment and sacrifice in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and protecting the nation’s economic interests.

He spoke at the 2026 International Fleet Review held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront, Lagos, as part of events to commemorate the Navy’s 70th Anniversary.  President Tinubu also commissioned three Nigerian Naval vessels: NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila, and NNS Gurara.

As reviewing officer at the event, President Tinubu praised the Navy’s achievements in combating piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, maritime smuggling, and other transnational crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.

He specifically lauded the Navy’s sustained efforts against crude oil theft and maritime criminality, noting that these operations have significantly boosted oil production, improved national revenue, and strengthened investor confidence in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

“Beyond the maritime domain, I also commend the Nigerian Navy for its contributions to counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations across the country. The courage and professionalism demonstrated by the Special Boat Service in executing complex missions are truly commendable.

“More so, with the recent induction of the Nigerian Navy Marines into operational theatres, I am confident that even greater successes will be recorded. Indeed, the Nigerian Navy has become an indispensable pillar of both national and regional security,’’ the President said.

President Tinubu thanked friendly nations and foreign navies for attending the International Fleet Review, describing the event as a testament to growing international cooperation for maritime security and collective prosperity.

He noted that the Nigerian Navy has evolved into a formidable maritime force whose operational successes have significantly enhanced security within Nigeria’s territorial waters and contributed to regional and international maritime stability.

“Nigeria’s maritime domain, endowed with immense natural wealth, remains a vital pillar of our national economy, serving as a major source of foreign exchange and a critical artery for global trade. I commend the Nigerian Navy for its steadfast guardianship of this strategic space.

“Through the effective integration of surveillance systems, rapid response mechanisms and robust enforcement operations, you have successfully eradicated piracy in our waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and associated maritime crimes. These achievements have enhanced the security of our littoral communities and contributed to increased oil production, thereby supporting national economic growth.

“Your theme for this milestone event, ‘Seven Decades of Operational Excellence,’ is not merely a slogan, but a proven reality. As we look to the future, I am confident that the Nigerian Navy will sustain this momentum and continue to secure the maritime environment as a thriving engine of our blue economy,’’ he said.

President Tinubu further acknowledged the Navy’s collaboration with other security agencies, regional partners, and international allies in ensuring the Gulf of Guinea remains safer for commercial shipping and maritime activities.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Navy’s operational capabilities through continued investment in modern platforms, advanced technology, personnel welfare, training, and capacity development.

The President congratulated the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, officers, ratings, veterans, and families of Nigerian Navy personnel on this historic milestone, urging them to remain steadfast in their commitment to duty, patriotism, and service to the nation.

This followed the abduction of pupils and teachers from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School on May 15, 2026.

The delegation conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s deep concern over the incident and his commitment to securing the safe return of the victims.

As part of immediate measures to strengthen security in the area, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State in collaboration with the state government.

The delegation also informed community leaders and lawmakers that their request for the establishment of a military base in the area would be conveyed to the President for consideration and approval.

In addition, the President has directed a specialized security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.

This was revealed in a press statement issued in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

The delegation was led by the President’s Chief of Staff, Hon. “Mr. President is deeply troubled by this incident,” Gbajabiamila said. “Whatever it takes, our children and teachers will be brought back home safely. He has issued all necessary directives and is providing every support required by our security agencies to achieve that objective.

“Your pain and anxiety are understood. By the grace of God, your children will return safely to your arms.

“Mr. President also saw the appeals from some parents and community members urging caution in the rescue efforts. Let me assure you that the operation will be intelligence-led and carefully coordinated, deploying both kinetic and non-kinetic measures to secure the safe return of the victims.”

The delegation was also at the palace of the Soun of Ogbomoso land, HRM Kabiyesi Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, to commiserate with him and his people. • Ogbebor to Tinubu: Save Itsekiri from ‘Looming Genocide’

Ogbebor to Tinubu: Save Itsekiri from ‘Looming Genocide’

    President Tinubu
    President Tinubu

Prominent Itsekiri leader, businesswoman, hotelier and philanthropist, Chief Mrs. Rita Lori Ogbebor has sent an SOS (save our soul) to President Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, security agencies, and other relevant organs of government to move speedily to save the Itsekiris from what she called “a looming genocide” in Warri.

Ogbebor, also the Igba of Warri, raised the alarm during a press conference in Lagos, on Friday, in response to a joint world press conference by Ijaw and Urhobo leaders in Delta State held upper week in Warri.

At the conference, Ijaw leaders had asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, not to prevaricate over a reported proposal for delineation of Warri; and creation of more wards and polling units in Warri North and South respectively. The Ijaw leaders threatened that they would “do what we know how to do best” should their agitation not heeded by the electoral umpire.

Ogbebor condemned what she called the “brazen threats of violence” by the Ijaw leaders during the said press conference, maintaining that the agitation was a ploy to emasculate the Itsekiris on their ancestral land.

The Igba of Warri described the “purported delineation” as a “looming genocide” against the Itsekiri ethnic nationality in Delta State, warning that the situation could degenerate rapidly into full-scale conflict if the Federal Government fails take urgent action.

The elder stateswoman accused politicians of fueling ethnic tensions in the oil-rich Warri axis for selfish political and economic interests tied to control of oil resources.

According to her, the Itsekiri people are under coordinated attacks and intimidation from neighbouring ethnic groups, particularly the Ijaw and Urhobo, who, she alleged, told their kinsmen across the globe to unite against the Itsekiri.

“You may say the word genocide is harsh, but it is true,” Ogbebor declared. “It is a fact. There is a looming genocide against the Itsekiri, and the whole world, the President of this country and Nigerians must know that the Itsekiri are being battered.”

She recalled the deadly crisis that roiled Warri between 1997 and 2003, which, she said, was triggered by disputes over local government headquarters and political structures allegedly manipulated by politicians.

She categorically accused former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, of worsening the crisis through the creation of additional local government areas and relocation of local government structures without due process.

That move by Ibori, she posited further, ignited years of bloodshed in the region.

“For eight years they fought us,” she continued. “What is at stake is the oil money. Every politician wants to control that area because of the oil wells in our land.”

Ogbebor maintained that the Itsekiri are the original owners of Warri, insisting that all disputed territories had been adjudicated upon up to the Supreme Court in favour of the Itsekiri.

She described the Ijaw and Urhobo as settlers who quietly executed an expansionist agenda and later began laying claim to lands belonging to the Itsekiri.

“There is a judgment that says everybody in Warri, except the Itsekiri, is a settler,” she stated.

The Itsekiri leader warned that continued suppression and territorial encroachment could spark another round of violent conflict in the Niger Delta if the federal government fails to act proactively.

“Nigeria will wake up one morning and the whole area will be in flames,” she warned. “And then it will not be the Itsekiri alone; it will be a war.”

Ogbebor urged the Federal Government to urgently intervene by providing adequate protection for the Itsekiri people and revisiting past decisions surrounding ward and local government delineations in Warri.

She summed up everything and declared that  the creation of a separate Warri State is the permanent solution to the problem, arguing that the Itsekiri people deserve political autonomy and protection.

“We want Warri State,” she declared firmly. “We were a nation on our own. Warri is viable and meets the conditions required for state creation.”

She further demanded the reversal of the relocation of the Warri South-West Local Government headquarters from Ogidigben to Ogbe-Ijaw, insisting that the original gazetted location should be restored.

Ogbebor also called for the enforcement of existing court judgments on disputed lands in Okere and other parts of Warri, stressing that failure to respect judicial pronouncements would continue to fuel unrest in the region.

The outspoken activist said the Itsekiri had remained peaceful despite years of provocation, but warned that there was a limit to endurance.

“We are in our land,” she said. “We have not gone to anybody’s land. Why do they want to wipe us out?”

The press briefing comes amid renewed tensions in parts of Delta State over political representation, land ownership and control of oil-bearing communities.

  • We’ll Defeat Forces of Evil–Tinubu Assures in Sallah Message

We’ll Defeat Forces of Evil–Tinubu Assures in Sallah Message

In his congratulatory message to Muslim faithful, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has, for the umpteenth time assured Nigerians that his government and the country will prevail against all the forces of evil currently tormenting the nation.

The President gave the assurance in his 2026 Eid El-Kabir message to Muslim faithful.

In the message, which he personally issued on Tuesday, President Tinubu said his reforms have provided stability and strength for the economy, sending a strong beam of hope.

While admitting that the forces of darkness have recently hurt the nation by hitting vulnerable communities, he strongly assured that Nigeria will ultimately overcome and overrun the forces of evil.

Below is the full text of the President’s message:

PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU’S EID-EL- KABIR 2026 MESSAGE

I extend warm felicitations to our Muslim brothers and sisters across Nigeria and worldwide as they celebrate the glorious Eid-el-Kabir, the Festival of Sacrifice.

We give glory to Almighty God for preserving our lives to witness this important celebration once again.

Eid-el-Kabir reminds us of the enduring virtues exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim—faith, obedience, and the willingness to sacrifice for a higher purpose. This sacred festival calls on all Muslims, and indeed all Nigerians and the whole of humanity, to embrace sacrifice, selflessness, unity, and compassion for our fellow human beings.

One central lesson of Eid-el-Kabir is the call to show mercy and compassion, regardless of race, ethnicity, or creed. There is no greater example of duty and devotion than Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to offer his only son, Ismail, as a sacrifice to Allah.

As a nation, we are on a journey of reconstruction and renewal. The reforms we have undertaken are challenging but necessary to build a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria for future generations.

Just as sacrifice brings reward, I am happy that the sacrifices and efforts we have made over the past three years have yielded a more stable economy, making our country a preferred investment destination that will drive job creation and economic growth. The walk through the dark tunnel is over, and the light is here.

I am confident that, by the Grace of God, the reforms we have diligently pursued will continue to yield improved security and greater opportunities for all.

I am aware that, despite the best efforts of our security and intelligence agencies—including the recent elimination of a wanted ISIS leader—heartless terrorists and bandits still attack some communities. I assure you: you are neither abandoned nor forgotten. We will ultimately defeat all the forces of evil.

To our Muslim faithful, I urge you to use this sacred occasion to pray for our country, for peace in our communities, and for wisdom for those in leadership.

Let us pray that those who commit crimes among us may rethink and abandon their evil ways, or face the full weight of the law.

Let us also reach out to the less privileged, share with our neighbours, and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that unite us as one people.

My administration remains committed to building a Nigeria where all citizens can live in peace, worship freely, and pursue their dreams without fear.

We will continue to invest in security, infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital to fulfil the great promise of our great nation.

On behalf of the government, I wish you all a peaceful, joyous, and blessed Eid al-Kabir. May Allah accept our sacrifices and prayers, and may He continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    Eid Mubarak! Happy Sallah!

PTDF Gets New Executive Secretary, as Tinubu Renews Tenure of TCN Boss

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Shu’aibu Shehu Aliyu as the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). He replaces Ahmed Galadima Aminu,  who recently resigned to participate in the 2027 governorship election in  Adamawa State.

President Tinubu has also renewed Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz’s appointment as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for a second and final term.

    Both appointments take immediate effect.

Professor Aliyu, the new PTDF helmsman, was, until his appointment, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education.

  • Iran names Khamenei’s hardline son Mojtaba as new supreme leader, as oil price surges

Iran names Khamenei’s hardline son Mojtaba as new supreme leader, as oil price surges

Iran on Monday named Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father Ali Khamenei as supreme leader, signaling that hardliners remain firmly in charge, as the week-old U.S.-Israeli war with Iran pushed oil above $100 a barrel.

Mojtaba, a cleric with influence inside Iran’s security forces and vast business networks under his father, had been viewed as a frontrunner ‌in the lead-up to Sunday’s vote by the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 clerics tasked with choosing Ali Khamenei’s successor.

“By a decisive vote, the Assembly of Experts, appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the Assembly said in a statement issued just after midnight Tehran time.

The position gives Mojtaba the final say in all matters of state in the Islamic Republic.

Mojtaba’s appointment will likely draw the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, who said on Sunday that Washington should have a say in the selection. “If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long,” he told ABC News.

Israel, ahead of the announcement, threatened to target whoever was chosen.

In an interview with the Times of Israel after the new supreme leader was named, Trump declined to respond, saying only “We’ll see what happens,” according to the newspaper. Trump also said in the interview that ending the war would be a “mutual” decision with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Mojtaba’s father, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was killed in one of the first strikes launched against Iran more than a week ago.

Washington on Sunday ordered the departure of non-emergency employees at its embassy in Saudi Arabia, the latest drawdown of U.S. diplomats as Iran has struck U.S. facilities in the region.

The U.S. military reported a seventh American has died from wounds sustained during Iran’s initial counter-attack a week ago, a day after Trump presided over the return to the United States of the remains of the six others killed.

  • How Mexico Killed Most Powerful Drug Cartel Leader, ‘El Mencho’

How Mexico Killed Most Powerful Drug Cartel Leader, ‘El Mencho’

The Mexican army killed the country’s most powerful cartel leader and one of the United States’ most wanted fugitives, notching a major victory while cartel members responded with a wave of violence across the country.

The killing Sunday of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes during an attempt to capture him in Jalisco state was the highest-profile blow against cartels since the recapture of former Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman a decade ago.

Following Oseguera Cervantes’ death, security forces were placed on alert throughout the country as gunmen unleashed violence. Cars torched by cartel members blocked roads in 20 Mexican states. People locked themselves in their homes in Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city and Jalisco’s capital, and school was canceled Monday in several states.

The killing could give the government a leg up in its dealings with the Trump administration, which has been threatening tariffs or unilateral military action if Mexico does not show results in the fight against the cartels. But the long-term effect on Mexico’s security landscape remains unclear.

    Here’s what to know:

‘El Mencho’ was the leader of a fast-growing criminal group

Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho,” was 59 years old and originally from the western state of Michoacan. His ties to organized crime went back at least three decades.

In 1994, he was tried for trafficking heroin in the U.S. and sent to prison for three years. Upon returning to Mexico, he quickly rose through Mexico’s drug trafficking underworld.

Around 2009, he founded the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which became Mexico’s fastest-growing criminal organization, moving cocaine, methamphetamines, fentanyl and migrants to the United States, and using violence with the use of drones and improvised explosive devices.

The cartel earned a reputation for brazen attacks on Mexican security forces, including downing of a military helicopter in Jalisco in 2015 and attempting a spectacular, but unsuccessful, assassination of Mexico City Police Chief Omar García Harfuch, who is now Mexico’s federal security secretary.

It recruited aggressively, experimenting with new ways to reach potential members online, and generated revenue through fuel theft, extortion and timeshare fraud, among other activities.

Oseguera Cervantes died in a battle with troops sent to capture him

Oseguera Cervantes was killed during an attempt to capture him, as his followers attempted to fight off Mexican troops.

Mexico’s Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla said Monday that the army and National Guard launched an operation in the southern part of Jalisco state to capture Oseguera Cervantes, involving the Mexican air force and special forces. Intelligence gathered about one of Oseguera Cervantes’ romantic partners led them to his hideout, he said.

The cartel counterattacked, and in the ensuing confrontation, federal forces killed eight members of the criminal group. Oseguera Cervantes and two of his bodyguards were wounded and died later during transfer by air to Mexico City, Trevilla said.

Rocket launchers capable of shooting down aircraft and destroying armored vehicles were seized at the scene.

Mexico is keen to show Trump results in the fight against cartels

Oseguera Cervantes’ death will help Mexico’s government show results to the U.S., which is pressuring its neighbor to pursue drug cartels more aggressively. Both countries said intelligence cooperation helped lead to Sunday’s operation.

Oseguera Cervantes was facing multiple indictments in the United States and the U.S. State Department had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest. The Trump administration designated his cartel and others foreign terrorist organizations a year ago.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who was U.S. ambassador to Mexico during the first Trump administration, applauded the operation via X, writing: “The good guys are stronger than the bad guys. Congratulations to the forces of law and order in the great Mexican nation.”

Mike Vigil, former chief of international operations for the DEA, said Mexico had sent “a strong message to Donald Trump’s administration that they are fighting aggressively and effectively” against the most powerful cartels. He added that “the majority of the information came from the Mexican armed forces and all credit goes to Mexico.”

Cartel leader’s death leaves a power vacuum

It’s not clear who will succeed Oseguera Cervantes, or if any one person can.

The Jalisco cartel has a presence in at least 21 of Mexico’s 32 states and is active in almost all of the United States, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. But it is also a global organization and the loss of its leader could be felt well beyond Mexico.

“El Mencho controlled everything, he was like a country’s dictator,” Vigil said.

His absence could slow the cartel’s rapid growth and expansion and leave it initially weakened against the Sinaloa cartel on several fronts where they or their proxies are fighting. The Sinaloa is locked in its own internal power struggle, however, between the sons of “El Chapo” and the faction loyal to Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who is in U.S. custody.

Vigil said Mexico should seize the moment to launch “an effective frontal assault based on intelligence.”

“This is a big opportunity for Mexico and the United States if they work together,” he said.

Security analyst David Saucedo said that if relatives of Oseguera Cervantes take control of the cartel, the violence seen Sunday could continue. If others take power, they could be more willing to turn the page and continue operations.

The greatest fear would be that the cartel turns to indiscriminate violence. They could decide to “launch narcoterrorism attacks … and generate a scenario similar to what Colombia lived in the 1990s,” a full-on attack against the government “car bombs, assassinations and attacks on aircraft.”

An armed man drove into the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s resort in Palm Beach, Florida, before being shot and killed early Sunday morning, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service.

Although Trump often spends weekends at his resort, he was at the White House when the breach occurred around 1:30 a.m.

The man had a gas can and a shotgun, authorities said. Investigators identified him as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina, according to a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to discuss it publicly, and authorities said his family had recently reported him missing.

He’s believed to have purchased his shotgun while driving south, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said, and a box for the weapon was later discovered in the man’s vehicle.

Investigators have not identified a motive. However, Trump has faced threats to his life before, including two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign.

    The investigation is ongoing

The man entered the north gate of the property as another vehicle was exiting and was confronted by two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

“He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with him. At which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” Bradshaw said at a brief press conference. The two agents and the deputy “fired their weapons to neutralize the threat.”

The Moore County Sheriff’s Department in North Carolina said a relative of Martin’s reported him missing early Sunday morning.

Investigators are working to compile a psychological profile. Asked whether the man was previously known to law enforcement, Bradshaw said “not right now.”

The FBI encouraged residents who live near Mar-a-Lago to check any security cameras they may have for footage that could help investigators.

In a post on X, FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau would be “dedicating all necessary resources” to the investigation.

Martin was described by family as quiet and averse to guns

On Sunday afternoon, vehicles blocked the entrance to a property listed in public records as an address for Martin at the end of a private road in Cameron, North Carolina.

Braeden Fields, Martin’s cousin, reacted with disbelief. He described Martin as quiet, afraid of guns and from a family of avid Trump supporters.

“He’s a good kid,” Fields, 19, said. He said they grew up together. “I wouldn’t believe he would do something like this. It’s mind-blowing,” Fields said.

He said Martin worked at a local golf course and would send money from each paycheck to charity.

“He wouldn’t even hurt an ant. He doesn’t even know how to use a gun,” Fields said.

He said his cousin didn’t discuss politics.

“We are big Trump supporters, all of us. Everybody,” Fields said, but his cousin was “real quiet, never really talked about anything.”

Trump faced two assassination attempts during his last campaign

Sunday’s incursion at Mar-a-Lago took place a few miles from Trump’s West Palm Beach club where a man tried to assassinate him while he played golf during the 2024 campaign.

A Secret Service agent spotted that man, Ryan Routh, aiming a rifle through the shrubbery before Trump came into view. Officials said Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire and caused Routh to drop his weapon.

Routh was found guilty last year and sentenced this month to life in prison.

Trump also survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. That gunman fired eight shots before being killed by a Secret Service counter sniper. One rally attendee was killed by the gunman.

White House brings in shutdown politics

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a post on X that “the United States Secret Service acted quickly and decisively to neutralize a crazy person, armed with a gun and a gas canister, who intruded President Trump’s home.”

Leavitt used her post to blame Democratic lawmakers in Congress for the partial government shutdown affecting the Homeland Security Department, which began Feb. 14 after Democrats demanded changes to the president’s deportation campaign.

The Secret Service is among the agencies where the vast majority of employees are continuing their work but missing a paycheck.

“Federal law enforcement are working 24/7 to keep our country safe and protect all Americans,” Leavitt said. “It’s shameful and reckless that Democrats have chosen to shut down their Department.”

The White House referred all questions to the Secret Service and FBI. Both Trump and his wife posted statements on social media after the incident, but they were unrelated to the shooting.

Numerous recent acts of politically motivated violence

In the past year, there was the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk; the assassination of the Democratic leader in the Minnesota state House and her husband and the shooting of another lawmaker and his wife; and an arson attack at the official residence of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Five days ago, a Georgia man armed with a shotgun was arrested as he sprinted toward the west side of the U.S. Capitol. Trump is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address there on Tuesday night.
