STORM DISASTER: BUHARI SENDS DELEGATION TO BAUCHI
President Muhammadu Buhari. Tuesday, dispatched the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, as head of a Federal Government delegation, to Bauchi State to have a first hand assessment of the devastation wrought by a windstorm that destroyed an estimated 1505 houses, mainly in the state capital.
Eight persons have been confirmed dead in the disaster while 120 others sustained various degrees of injury.
Azare, another major town was struck by a major fire disaster that destroyed the market in the town a few days after.
A release issued, Tuesday, by Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said the delegation, which included the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Engineer Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja, will undertake an assessment of the damage done by the disaster.
Already, NEMA has started mobilising relief items from its warehouses located in Damaturu, Yobe State, as well as in Yola, Adamawa State, for onward distribution to those displaced by the windstorm. The aid materials were expected to reach Bauchi, Tuesday evening, while assessment was being conducted on the fire incident in Azare.
In an earlier message on Monday, President Buhari had extended his deepest sympathies to the victims and families of devastating windstorm and the fire incidents. “The nation stands in solidarity with their fellow countrymen in this difficult time as they face the devastation with courage and fortitude,” the President said.
