Relief as NLC, TUC Suspend Nationwide Strike
Following the intervention of the National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the joint National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) rose from their emergency meeting, Wednesday evening, and aborted the indefinite nationwide strike that they had called to protest the brutalization of the NLC President Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, 2023.
The strike was called off on its second day, Wednesday.
Festus Osifo, TUC President, confirmed the suspension to Channels Television Wednesday evening.
According to Osifo, organised labour took the decision after it had received commitment from the Ribadu-inspired meeting that those arrested for the physical assault on Ajaero would be prosecuted.
There were earlier reports that two persons may have been arrested in connection with the assault.
According to the report monitored on Channels Television, Ribadu tendered an unreserved apology on behalf of the Federal Government for the brutalisation of Ajaero and other members of the congress.
He also promised to bring both parties back to the table to iron out all issues in dispute,
The meeting was attended by the TUC President, Festus Osifo; NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Barrister Simon Lalong, among others..
