PDP AT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, PROTEST ASSAULT ON FAYOSE
BY OUR CORRESPONDENT
Uche Secondus, national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP earlier Thursday led leaders of the party to protest against the alleged assault on Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State. The leaders of the opposition party were at the National Assembly complex to register their displeasure over the report that Governor Fayose was teargassed and shot at by men of the Nigeria Police at the Government House in Ado Ekiti, capital of the state on Wednesday.
Fayose had broken down while relating his experience shortly after the reported controversial attack. Though the State Police command denied the allegation, leaders of PDP expressed the fear that such developments are threats to democracy in the country. The police had in a statement countered the claim by Fayose and Kolapo Olusola, deputy governor and candidate of PDP in Saturday’s election that they were beaten up by the police.
According to the police, what it advised against was for the two parties to have rallies in the state capital the same day or undertake processions in the town. The police said the prevailing tension in the state does not encourage such a plan.
But the statement by the police did not say anything about the alleged firing of teargas canisters at the crowd around the government house, which the governor claimed almost suffocated him, and the allegation that its personnel told both state leaders that they (the police) were supposedly acting on instructions.
Party leaders who accompanied Secondus to the National Assembly complex include Adolphus Wabara, former president of the Senate , ABC Nwosu, a former minister of health, Josephine Anenih, former national women leader of PDP and Mulikat Akande-Adeola, a former majority leader in the Senate.
Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate president led the federal legislators who received the party leaders.
