The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA has shifted Election of its national officers by two weeks. The election earlier scheduled to commence Monday August 6 will now hold between Sunday August 19 and Monday August 20 this year. Abubakar Mahmoud, senior advocate of Nigeria, SAN who is also the president of the body said in Abuja Monday that the shift became necessary to address the difficulties encountered by members in the verification exercise prior to election.
The Electoral Committee will reopen the verification exercise on Tuesday August 8 to attend to those who have not been captured. What that means is that the 5,500 members already captured by Chams, the company that started the verification exercise are presumed to have concluded verification. However, another company, CRENET will now continue with the process.
According to Mahmoud, CRENET will do the reconciliation between August 11 and 15, followed by publication of the final voters list on August 16. He said the shift of the polls, which should have been conducted in July, was done to enable the Bar conduct a free and fair election. The current president was elected two years ago.
Meanwhile, the first task of the prospective executive would be to fish out some criminal elements in the association or likely cronies of any mischievous member(s) who may have been involved in some forgery to deceive association members. This is because the executive would have to find out the brains behind what is believed to be a deliberate misinformation concerning the purported resignation of Prof. Auwalu Yadudu , as chairman of the Electoral Committee. Yadudu who denied the story of his purported resignation said the association would have to investigate the source of the letter, which bore his signature, apparently forged.
