Nigerian university students may have to stay more time at home as the lingering strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, continues. Monday negotiation between the union and the Federal Government is reported to have ended in a deadlock.
Emerging from the meeting which was held at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, the National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the meeting had been adjourned. He, however did not state when another meeting would be held for continued negotiation.
“All I can say for now is that negotiation continues and the meeting has been adjourned to a later date,” Ogunyemi said.
ASUU started an indefinite strike on November 5, 2018 to protest Federal government’s failure to fulfill its promise to improve the funding of universities. The agreement is contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties in 2017, but the government has failed to honour it out.
Ogunyemi had said “It would be recalled that the federal government had agreed to inject N1.3 trillion to fund universities at N220 billion yearly for five years.
“If government fails to fund public universities the situation on campuses may degenerate, worse than the already poor quality teaching and learning environment.”
