The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied involvement with the reported violence that erupted Thursday in Iperu town in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.
A statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of the APC Ogun Executive Caretaker Committee, Tunde Oladunjoye, said the party and its governorship candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, as well as its teeming supporters were in Yewa South LG in continuation of its peaceful campaign.
Oladunjoye said: “We were not in anyway, directly or indirectly, linked to any violence either in Iperu or any part of Ogun State.
“For anyone to link our party and candidate to the condemnable violence in Iperu, not only confirmed our previous alarm on planned smear campaign against Prince Dapo Abiodun.
“Linking us with the incident also underlined the desperation to just hang anything on our candidate in order to tarnish his popular image and growing acceptance by the people of Ogun, especially with the national outcry that has greeted the devilish attack on our crowd of supporters in Odogbolu last Saturday.”
He added: “We want to place on record that, immediately the information on the violence got to our candidate while he was campaigning in Ajilete, Yewa South LG, he quickly put a telephone call to the Ogun State Police Commissioner, who promised to send reinforcement to the scene.”
The APC spokesman said that ‘our campaign team was also attacked in Iwoye, Yewa South LG, where one of our supporters was inflicted machete cuts on his head. We urge the security agents to fish out the culprits behind these incidences of violence.’
“We want to reiterate our commitment to peaceful electioneering and the position of our candidate that his ambition to be governor of Ogun State is not worth the blood of anyone.”
