IGP vows to end jungle justice

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, on Monday, expressed deep concerns over increasing incidents of impunity and jungle justice and all manner of dehumanising treatments meted to Nigerians by unscrupulous persons.

Adamu was appalled by a recent incident in which a 45-year-old woman, identified as Odugu Blessing Dada of No. 77 Morka Street, Boji-boji Owa in Ika North East LGA of Delta State, was terribly assaulted and debased by some unscrupulous persons. The unsavoury attack went viral on social media.

This was in addition to similar incidents, before it, that occurred in Edo, Lagos, Abuja and Ebonyi, to mention a few. .

A statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, Mr. Frank Mba, an assistant commissioner of police, ACP, said the IGP decried this worrisome development and warned that his administration had zero tolerance for human rights abuses, especially gender based violence. And he would “do everything humanly possible and within the ambit of the law to put an end to the scourge and effectively prosecute all offenders.”

Adamu also condoled with all victims of jungle justice and other forms of extra-judicial acts, particularly Odugu Blessing Dada, her family and friends, over the wicked and unwarranted assault on her by one Friday Ndudi Eluro and his gang.

The IGP, ACP Mba added in the statement, commended “all Nigerians, whom, by their words and actions, have clearly identified with the victim and raised the red flag on impunity and all forms of inhuman treatment in the country.”

Adamu enthused that the alleged perpetrators of the dehumanising incident are in the net. He, therefore, ordered the new Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr Yinka Adeleke, to ensure that the case be expeditiously and thoroughly investigated and all indicted suspects charged to court.

The IGP urged “all Nigerians to steer-clear of human rights violations and all manner of impunity and jungle justice and to report all incidence to the nearest relevant authority.”

Henceforth, he said, persons who violate the rights of others would not be spared the wrath of the law., “They will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he added.
