Car Fraud: Mama Boko Haram, 2 Others Get 15 Years in Jail
A Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital has convicted and sentenced Aisha Wakil, otherwise known as Mama Boko Haram, and two others to a combined 15 years imprisonment for a N6million car fraud.
This was disclosed on Monday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which noted that Wakil, alongside the Programme Manager of her Complete Care and Aid Foundation, Tahiru Saidu Daura, and the Country Director, Lawal Shoyode, was convicted after being found guilty of fraudulently obtaining a Toyota Camry 2012 model from a petitioner under false pretense.
The EFCC had re-arraigned the troika on four counts of conspiracy, cheating, and providing false information in September 2020, to which they pleaded not guilty.
In their statement, the EFCC said the defendants neither purchased the vehicle as agreed nor returned it to the petitioner, hence their conviction.
But at the end of proceedings, Justice Aisha Kumaliya found them guilty as charged and gave each defendant a five-year prison sentence last Thursday.
The anti-graft agency, represented by Mukhtar Ahmed and Shamsudeeb Saka, had, during the trial, presented three witnesses and submitted several documents as evidence.
Justice Kumaliya ruled in favour of the prosecution and sentenced the defendants to five years imprisonment each, without the option of a fine.
The convicts were also ordered to pay a restitution of N3.5million to the petitioner, failing which they could get additional five years imprisonment each.
