Low Turn-Out: Politicians Get Creative

Jimi Agbaje and Sanwo-olu

BY TAIWO FAROTIMI

In what appears a desperate move to increase the tally of votes during the on-going governorship and state assembly elections, politicians appears to have devised some innovative ideas. For instance, in the Alimosho local government area of Lagos state politicians were so concerned that they had to embark on a house-to-house visit to gear up people they knew had voted during the presidential and national assembly elections, but had not been seen at the polling booths on Saturday. That sensitization was necessary because Alimosho is the largest local government area in the state, and it has a history of turning out the greatest number of votes.

When hours into the voting period there were still a great deal of reluctance, politicians changed tactics. Members of one of the major political parties in the state got hold of a bell and went about like town criers. The message was to appeal to voters to come out and vote for candidates of their choice.

It was still not clear how effective that strategy was, as at the time of filling this report.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress, APC and Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP are the leading candidates among those contesting for the office of governor of the state.
