...To now run from dusk till dawn

The Adamawa State Government has reviewed the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state following the mayhem and looting spree unleashed on the capital, Yola, by rampaging hoodlums on Sunday.

Following some calm, the state government, on Monday, reviewed the curfew from the initial 24 hours to now run from dusk to dawn, from 6p.m. to 6a.m.

The development, according the the government, is to enable citizens to continue with their lawful businesses.

The Crest recalls that all hell was let loose on the  Adamawa capital on Sunday by people who the government described as hoodlums, who broke into government and private warehouses searching for food and other items.

According to reports, at least five  persons were reportedly during the hours of rage as residents ran in every direction looking for safety.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri promptly imposed a 24-hour curfew to stem the violence and mindless looting.
Residents likened the mayhem to what happened in the aftermath of the #ENDSARS protest of 2020, as hoodlums stormed the warehouses located at PZ and Kwanar Waya from as early as 9a.m., and carted away food items including rice, noodles, seasoning, palm oil etc.

The government called in the military, mobile police and other security operatives to normalize the situation.

Fintiri justified the imposition of the curfew following the dangerous dimension had taken in the state capital as the hoodlums reportedly attacked people with dangerous weapons, including matchettes, and broke into business premises, looting valuables.

Reacting to the dangerous situation, the government had said: “The Governor of Adamawa State, the Rt Hon Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has declared a 24-hour curfew on the state, effective immediately Sunday 30th July, 2023.

“Governor Fintiri said the curfew followed the dangerous dimension the activities of hoodlums had assumed across the state capital as they attack people with matchet and break into business premises and homes carting away property. With the curfew imposed, there will be no movement throughout the state. Only those on essential duties with valid identification would be permitted to move around during the period of the curfew.

“The Governor is appealing to citizens and residents of the state to comply with the directive, adding that any person found contravening the order would be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.”
