Unilag Students Protest Tragic Death of Medical Doctor Killed 24 Hrs After Graduation
Following the tragic killing of a medical doctor, Dr. Urueye Stephen by hoodlums few hours after graduation Thursday night, some students of the University of Lagos have staged a peaceful protest at Idi Araba to condemn the dastardly killing.
The protesters took to the streets in the area, carrying placards with various inscriptions and calling for justice for the victim.
They alleged that Idi-Araba has been overtaken by armed thugs and called on relevant agencies to beef up security in the area.
One of the students explained that they were embarking on the demonstration to call the government’s attention to the dangers students of the institution face daily living in the area.
Suspected armed robbers were reported to have stabbed and left Dr. Urueye to die 24 hours after his graduation.
Urueye Stephen was walking along Idi Araba road when he was accosted by the hoodlums who stabbed him before carting away his properties .
Taking to Facebook to mourn his death, his friend and former UNILAG SUG president, Adeyeye Olorunfemi, wrote: “And we lost Stephen. We lost this young Doctor who wants to save lives to insecurity. He died 24 hours after his graduation. After 8 years of struggle in the jungle called Nigeria.”
“He was stabbed by armed robbers and died of stab wounds right in front of a government teaching hospital- LUTH.
The medical students said they have always complained about the frequent robbery attacks around and on the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba Campus but the Management keep turning deaf ears.”
However, the Lagos State Police Command has yet to confirm the incident.
Sources close to Urueye told Channels Television on Friday that he was rushed to the emergency wing of LUTH on Thursday night after the attack.
He later died on Friday morning after efforts by doctors to keep him alive were unsuccessful.
