Updated: Buhari nominates Emefiele, CBN Gov, for second term

Godwin Emefiele, CBN Governor

The haze surrounding the second term bid of Central Bank Governor, Mr.  Godwin Emefiele, cleared on Wednesday as President Muhammadu Buhari transmitted his nomination letter for tenure elongation to the National Assembly.

The President, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, signed the letter for the CBN Governor’s tenure renewal on Wednesday.

The letter, the report further revealed, has also been sent to the senate for confirmation.

According to the CBN Act, the senate must confirm the nomination of any of its governor before it can take effect.

This is the first time since 1999, when Nigeria returned to democracy, that anyone would be nominated to serve two terms as CBN governor.

Emefiele was first appointed in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan and was retained by President Buhari when he took office in 2015.
