Zamfara: INEC declares Bello Matawalle, PDP candidate, Governor-elect

Less than 24 hours after the Supreme Court nullified the elections of the Governor-elect of Zamfara State, three senators  seven members of the House of Representatives, and 24 House of Assembly members, all of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, did the expected on Saturday.

The electoral umpire, in accordance with the apex court’s ruling, declared the People’s Democratic Party, PDP as the winner of the March 9, 2019, gubernatorial vote in Zamfara State.

Professor Mahmud Yakubu, INEC chairman, made the announcement at a crowded press conference in Abuja on Saturday.

With the fate of the APC and its candidates complete sealed by the Supreme Court, Bello Matawalle, PDP candidate in the governorship election is now the state’s governor-elect.

The INEC boss also declared that the PDP won in all elective positions in the state.

The Crest recalls that the Supreme Court had, on Friday, declared that the APC had no candidates in the 2019 general elections in Zamfara state.

In a unanimous judgment, the five-member panel of justices held that APC in Zamfara State failed to conduct primaries in sync with the party rules.

Consequently, the Supreme Court, in the lead judgment by Justice Paul Adamu Galinji, ruled that all votes cast for the APC were “wasted votes” and declared that all political parties with the second highest votes in the elections and the required spread, were duly elected in the various votes.

Friday’s ruling of the apex has changed the configuration of the 9th National Assembly due to be inaugurated on June 10, 2019.

For instance, with the ruling, APC now has 62 senators, PDP-44, and the Young Progressive Party,YPP, one (1). Two senate seats are pending.
