El-Zakzakky attack on NASS: IGP orders 24hrs surveillance on FCT and environs

IGP Mohammed Adamu

Sequel to Tuesday’s botched violent attack on the National Assembly by protesting members of the El-Zakzakky Group,  the Inspector General of Police,  Mohamed A Adamu, Tuesday night, ordered a 24-hour police surveillance in the Fed3eral Capital Teritory, FCT, and its environs.

He also directed the Commissioners of Police and their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police, AIGs in States contiguous to the FCT to be on high alert and ensure maximum security in their respective areas of responsibility.

They are to forestall any possible breach of public safety and security by any group or persons

A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, quoted the IGP as saying that while the force was not against anybody or group ventilating their grievances, such “must be done through legitimate and acceptable processes and not by taking the laws into their own hands.”

The IGP, therefore, warned that no citizen should test the collective will of the people and the state by engaging in lawless acts likely to cause the breach of the peace.

Meanwhile, the IGP has ordered a speedy and diligent investigation into the incident as well as prompt prosecution of all the persons arrested and now in police custody in connection with the incident.

IGP Adamu reiterated his displeasure with the unwarranted and unjustifiable attack on nine police officers by the protesting El-Zakzakky Group, and commended the restraint, maturity and professionalism displayed by police personnel in containing the protest.

The IGP also directed the AIG in charge of Police Medical Department to ensure that proper and prompt medical attention was given to the injured officers and wished the victims speedy recovery.
