Channels TV Reporter, Shot in Police/Shiite Face-off, is Dead

Channels Television has confirmed the death of its reporter, Precious Owolabi, who was caught in a cross-fire between police and Shiite Muslims protesting the continuing detention of their leader, El-Zakzakky, in Abuja.

Channels, in its flagship news bulletin, News at 10, said Owolabi was hit by a stray bullet as members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, also known as Shiites, clashed with officers of the Nigerian Police on Monday.

The protest by the Shiites turned violent in the federal capital, including the precincts of the Federal Secretariat, as the two sides engaged in gunfire.

Policemen, who cordoned off the road leading to the National Assembly and the three arms zone, disrupted the protest by the Shiites, firing teargas to disperse the crowd, the station further reported.

The station expressed its profound condolence to the family of its slain reporter.

Precious Owolabi was serving his one year mandatory national youth service with Channels Television. He was 23 years old.
