INEC Reschedules Elections in Benue

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Benue, Nentawe Yilwatda, has said elections will be rescheduled in the areas where electoral officers are attacked and electoral materials burned across the state.

He said this while addressing newsmen in Markurdi, the state capital during a press conference.

“I can confirm the incidents, and we will rescheduled elections in those places accordingly,” he said.

According to him, about 9,906 registered voters will be affected.

The REC also revealed that few ad-hoc staff have also been taken hostage along with voting materials, the Police are already investigating matter and we will soon get them released. The security agencies are doing the needful to address the situation,” he said.   

In the early hours of Saturday, March 9, gunmen attacked and burnt electoral materials in Gwer East Local Area.

The hoodlums on arrival, reportedly fired shots in the air before setting on fire the RCM Primary School Aya, housing the materials.

However, the REC expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election in other parts of the state, as most Polling Units reportedly opened on time. “Most Polling Units opened early as 8a.m and it is encouraging.”, he said.

Nigerians are voting in the gubernatorial elections and state house of assembly elections.

Gubernatorial elections is taking place in 29 states across the country.
