Death, today, Wednesday, December 18, 2019, sneaked into the Nigerian Senate and plucked one of its dazzling stars, Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu. He was a two-term senator representing Imo North Senatorial District.
Born June 30, 1968, Uwajumogu, also a former two-term Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, was reported to have slumped and died this morning at his Abuja home.
He was aged 51.
His sister and closest friend, Dr. Chidinma Uwajumogu was inconsolable and too distraught to answer her phone when The Crest called this evening.
One of his colleagues, and friend, Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, senator representing Osun East, said he was with the late Senator Uwajumogu last night discussing and chatting.
“His death is a rude shock to me,” Senator Fadahunsi told The Crest.
“I know death would come when it would come, but there was nothing so unusual about Senator Uwajumogu yesterday to suggest he would leave us so soon. This is a tragedy of monumental proportion. I pray God to comfort his family and stave the hand of death in our midst.”
As a mark of respect for one of its most distinguished members, the Senate would not have plenary on Thursday but meet briefly to observe a minute silence in honour of their departed colleague.
The Senate is yet to formally announce Senator Uwajumogu’s sudden demise.
