Sadio Mane Looks Set for African Football Crown as Salah May Miss Event

All is set for the 2019 African football awards in Egypt as the Confederation of African Football (CAF)  crowns its Player of the year at its awards ceremony in the Egyptian coastal resort of Hurghada on Tuesday.

Algeria’s Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez is up against the Liverpool duo of Sadio Mane of Senegal and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah for the prize.

Mane and Salah helped Liverpool win the European Cup and Club World Cup with the Egyptian striker in contention to win the prize for a third successive time.

Mahrez captained Algeria to Nations Cup success in Egypt in 2019 with Mane helping Senegal reach the final.

Looking at the crystal ball, it seems obvious that Salah may miss an opportunity to retain the African football crown as he may not even attend the show after Liverpool sent official letter to the CAF about the arrival of Senegalese forward Sadio Mane to Egypt, the Egyptian media reported that Egypt’s winger would not attend the gala as he was not mentioned in the English Premier League side’s letter.

The UEFA Champions League holders Liverpool sent a formal letter to the CAF informing them about the programme for their Senegalese star’s trip to Egypt to attend the 2019 African Player of the Year award ceremony.

“Mane will fly from England to Cairo in Liverpool’s private jet and he will arrive on Monday afternoon alongside seven escorts from the English Premier League team,” Liverpool said in their letter to the CAF.

As the letter did not mention the programme for Salah’s arrival, it is assumed that the Egyptian winger could miss the ceremony.

Salah is competing with his teammate Sadio Mane and Manchester City’s Algerian striker Riyad Mahrez.
