By Damola Emmanuel
As the tributes pour, and the world celebrates reggae idol, Majek Fahsek, the governor of his home state, Edo, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has been mourning the death of the music legend.
The electrifying performer, known all over the world with his iconic album, Send Down the Rain and So Long for Too Long, died in his sleep in New York, according to an announcement by his manager, Omenka Uzoma.
Though Majek, born Majekodunmi Fasheke, had been ill for some time, the cause of his death was still hazy at the time of this report.
But as his numerous fans across the country mourn his passing, Governor Obaseki celebrated the Rain Maker on his official twitter handle where he wrote:
Majek, who worked with the legendary Jimmy Cliff, as well as super stars like Tracy Chapman and Snoop Dogg. set dance halls and concert venues on fire in the 1980s with his scintillating performances, and his musical style and looks that mirrored the Jamaican legend.
He rekindled the fire of African nationalism in with his 1991 release, So Long for Too Long, in which he urged slumbering Africa to wake up and claim its pride of place in the world.
Announcing the musician’s death on his Instagram page, Uzoma urged the world not to weep for Majek but rather celebrate him and what he did in his 57 years on earth. This is “a time for us all to celebrate his achievements, and not mourn,” Uuzoma wrote.
