A 59-year-old cleric has died of coronavirus in Ondo State.
The clergyman died from coronavirus-related complications while he was receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital, in Akure, the state’s capital.
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu revealed this on Monday in a press briefing with journalists, in Akure.
He said the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases was becoming alarming and needed urgent intervention.
In the last two weeks, 19 persons have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the state, including a health worker, a journalist and an American returnee.
Akeredolu said the clergyman had travelled to Lagos where he developed difficulties in breathing before coming down to Akure to have his blood sample tested, which revealed he was COVID-19 positive.
He added that the fresh cases brought the total number of positive cases in the state to 43. While 22 patients had been discharged after testing negative to the virus twice.
According to the Governor, seven deaths related to coronavirus had been recorded in the state.
He said, “What these tell us is that COVID -19 is fully here with us and that community transmission is now a reality.
“Indeed, worse days seem to be approaching faster than we probably anticipated.
“As a people, we must make a choice now, between life and death, between health and wealth and between stability and unhappiness.
“The threat level remains high while the danger of undesirable eventualities are here with us every day.”
